Job Summary
A member of the Nursing Department, who, under the direct supervision and with consultation of a professional licensed nurse, performs a variety of support services to assist the professional nursing staff and optimize patient care.

- Risk Exposure Categories: tasks may involve exposure to blood/body fluids, may involve contact with blood/body fluids, or no risk of exposure.
- Working Conditions:
sits, stands, bends, lifts and moves intermittently; frequent interruptions; interaction with patients, residents, staff, government personnel; hostile and emotionally upset patients; communication with medical staff and other departments; attendance at continuing training; exposure to infectious waste; lifting, carrying and supporting patients; constant alert for patient safety; role of Unit Coordinator – Surgical Services in OR and CSR areas. - Unit Coordinator – Surgical Services: directly reports to the OR Clinical Coordinator or Chief Nurse Executive or designee; does not require patient care responsibilities.
- Essential Functions:
- Acute: prepares charts for new patients on Acute Care, includes I&O sheets evenings, maintains chart packs, manages lab/x‑ray reports, forwards charts, maintains patient lists, initiates referral forms, photocopies records, obtains old records, completes dietary sheets, performs clerical duties, handles telephone calls, assists visitors, distributes mail, covers hospital phones, familiar with CODE 4 and Fire/Disaster plans, maintains positive atmosphere, transcribes doctor’s orders to Kardex, manages STAT orders, assists with patient transport, maintains bulletin boards, orders supplies, delivers specimens, enforces visiting policies, schedules x‑ray/lab procedures, maintains confidentiality.
- ED: prepares ER charts for admission, maintains evacuation/packs, knowledge of patient locations, filings, log book, assists ER receptionist, registers patients, manages photocopies, performs clerical duties.
- Telephone/Visitor Reception and Communication: receives calls, forwards messages, provides visitor assistance, coordinates calls to other facilities, familiar with CODE BLUE, fire and disaster plans, maintains positive communication, may answer C‑Med radio.
- Transcription: transcribes orders, ensures STAT orders are brought to charge nurse, no verbal orders taken, arranges patient transport with nursing supervisor.
- Unit Upkeep – Supplies and Maintenance: maintains bulletin boards, orders supplies, delivers specimens and requisitions when directed.
- Other Related Duties: manages patient valuables, enforces visiting policies, informs staff of scheduled procedures, maintains confidentiality.
- Surgical Services: prepares charts, stamps pathology paperwork, maintains pathology packs, files lab/x‑ray reports, photocopies per Clinical Coordinator, obtains old records, performs clerical duties, forwards charts.
- Telephone/Visitor Reception and Communication (Surgical Services): handles calls, assists family members, familiar with Code 4/Fire/Disaster plans, maintains positive communication.
- Schedules: takes bookings, transcribes approved bookings, enters information into OR log book, assists with patient charges, prepares and distributes next‑day schedule sheets, maintains logs, ensures pre‑op lab work, H&P, EKG and x‑rays are in chart 48 hours pre‑op, data entry on computer for OR schedules and database.
- Unit Upkeep – Supplies and Maintenance: maintains bulletin boards, orders supplies, delivers specimens, manages wheelchair and stretcher transport, maintains confidentiality.
- Inventory and Supply Distribution/Storage: maintains weekly inventories of paper supplies, fills orders.
- Maintains Assigned Areas/Supplies: keeps shelves and work areas clean, knows chart locations.
- Education: High School Diploma or Equivalent. Experience cannot replace a degree.
- Work Experience: Previous hospital experience preferred (0‑1 year). Surgical Services scheduling experience preferred.
