Job Description

POSITION: BUILDING SUBSTITUTE TEACHER

REPORTS TO:

BUILDING PRINCIPAL

As a teacher in the Worcester Public Schools you will provide rigorous instruction to a diverse student population. You will align instruction to the district and state curriculum, regularly assess student learning, and modify instruction to ensure student success. A classroom environment should meet the needs of all students, especially English language learners and students with disabilities.

Accountability Objective

This position is responsible for delivering high‑quality instructional experience through creativity, resourcefulness, and sound judgment consistent with district frameworks, standards, and regulations. Building substitutes support school work and receive daily assignments from the building principal, which may include classroom teaching, grade level coverage, lunch, recess, hall passes, dismissal, or instructional assistant coverage.

Principal Responsibilities
  • Commit to remaining in the position for the complete school year.
  • Commit to reporting on time for complete work days.
  • Learn and follow district and school rules and procedures.
  • Work under the direction of the building principal and accept a variety of assignments.
  • Interact with students, colleagues, and families in a professional, respectful manner.
  • Supervise students and enforce school safety rules.
  • Prepare for assignments by reviewing curriculum and lesson plans.
  • Communicate with supervisors and colleagues about work‑related issues.
  • Work successfully in a fast‑paced environment.

  • Perform other job‑related duties as assigned.
Requirements

Successful applicants will be on duty 10 minutes before the school day starts and remain 30 minutes after it ends. Start and end times are posted on the district website.

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree.
  • Meet the district's attendance requirements.
  • Experience working with school‑aged students.
  • Willingness to complete a variety of school‑based assignments.
  • Willingness to learn and enforce school and district expectations for student and staff behavior.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Commitment to an environment that values and supports all students and families.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Demonstrated experience supporting students with special needs.
  • Ability to speak Albanian, Arabic, Nepali, Portuguese, Spanish, Vietnamese, or an African language.
  • Experience teaching English language learners.
Work Year

School‑year calendar, 180 pupil days.

Salary

$50.72 per hour (6 hours/day).
