Location: Worcester Public Schools, Worcester, Massachusetts
Reports To: Principal or Designated Supervisor

POSITION PURPOSE

This position is accountable for providing assistance to the classroom teacher and/or other certified personnel to support instruction for all students, including those with emotional regulation and behavior challenges, mild to moderate to severe special needs, and general education students. The goal is to facilitate educational access for students with disabilities, using sound judgment and adherence to Worcester Public Schools rules and regulations.

ESSENTIAL

JOB FUNCTIONS
  • Assisting the classroom teacher by reviewing, correcting, and reinforcing lessons with individual and small groups of students in all content areas and other activities as defined in the student’s IEP or 504 plan.
  • Assisting in preparation, inventory, setup, operation, and maintenance of instructional materials and classroom learning aids.
  • Supporting students’ physical and personal care needs, including lavatory routines, toileting, diapering, and lifting.
  • Supervising breakfast and/or lunch periods, assemblies, and cleaning up work areas.
  • Assisting in clerical work such as recording daily attendance, cataloging, and filing instructional materials.
  • Participating and contributing to weekly, monthly, and long‑range planning with the classroom teacher for instructional activities, school‑wide events, health testing, and other activities.
  • Maintaining open communication with the classroom teacher, under their supervision, throughout the workday.
  • Maintaining student confidentiality and providing a harassment‑free, discrimination‑free environment.
  • Supervising and supporting students in both structured and unstructured activities across all school environments.
  • Contributing to a warm and open atmosphere for all students’ growth and development.
  • Assisting substitute teachers in the absence of the classroom teacher.
  • Implementing district and school‑wide rules, policies, procedures, and individual student behavior plans.
  • Participating in related professional development specific to the administration of assessments and accommodations.
  • Performing duties within specialty areas, including grant programs requiring specialized training.
  • Performing duty work (lunch, recess, line, bus) when required by the building principal, with equitable distribution of assignments.
  • Participating in non‑violent crisis intervention training within the first year of employment.
  • Collecting data in accordance with students' learning goals and objectives.
  • Implementing behavior intervention plans and management to reduce problem behavior.
  • Adhering to the district’s equal educational opportunity and non‑discrimination policy.
  • Performing other job‑related duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • 48 undergraduate college credits, or
  • Meeting or exceeding the state‑determined passing score of 464 on the Paraprofessional (Para Pro) Assessment or the Work Keys Assessment.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Non‑violent crisis intervention training.
  • Demonstrated experience supporting students with special needs.
  • Ability to speak Albanian, Arabic, Nepali, Portuguese, Spanish, Vietnamese, an African language, or American Sign Language.
WORK YEAR

School‑year position: 180 pupil days, 3 days of professional development, and 6 additional hours of staff meeting time (assigned by principal or designated supervisor). This assignment covers a 1‑year leave of absence and ends on 6/30/2027.

WORK DAY

6 hours, plus a 30‑minute unpaid lunch.

SALARY

This position is represented by the Educational Association of Worcester Para educator Bargaining Unit. Salary is determined by step and lane placement on the para educator salary schedule. Assignment to a secondary school adds a contractual 18‑minute stipend equal to 5% of the established salary.
