Overview

This position provides assistance to classroom teachers and certified personnel to support instruction of all students, including those with emotional regulation, behavioral challenges, mild to moderate to severe special needs, and general education. The role ensures educational access for students with disabilities and involves working with student populations such as Autism, Creative Opportunities for Adolescents of Secondary Tier, Language Achievement and Beyond, Specialized Approaches to Individual Learning, Structured Therapeutic Education Program, and Transitional Life Skills.

Key Responsibilities
  • Assist the classroom teacher by reviewing, correcting, and reinforcing lessons and activities with individual and small groups as defined in the student’s IEP or 504 plan.
  • Assist in preparation, inventory, and maintenance of instructional materials and classroom learning aids and equipment.
  • Supervise breakfast and/or lunch periods, assemblies, and cleanup of work areas.
  • Assist with clerical work including attendance recording, and cataloging and filing instructional materials.
  • Participate in weekly, monthly, and long‑range planning with the classroom teacher for instruction, special events, field trips, school‑wide activities, health testing, etc.
  • Maintain open communication with students under the supervision of the teacher and/or administrator.
  • Maintain student confidentiality and promote an environment free from harassment and discrimination.
  • Supervise and support students in structured and unstructured activities across environments throughout the day.
  • Create a warm and open atmosphere to help all students reach their full potential.
  • Serve as the guiding source of information and assist substitute teachers in the teacher’s absence.
  • Implement district and school‑wide rules, policies, procedures, and individual student behavior plans.
  • Perform duties in specialty areas, including special projects requiring specialized training.
  • Perform duty work (lunch, recess, line, bus) as directed by the Building Principal, with equitable distribution.
  • Participate in non‑violent crisis intervention training within the first year of employment.
  • Collect data in accordance with student learning goals and objectives.
  • Implement behavior intervention plans and behavior management strategies to reduce problem behavior.
  • Support student physical and personal care needs such as restroom routines, toileting, diapering, feeding, and lifting.
  • Participate in related professional development specific to assessment and accommodation administration.
  • Adhere to the district’s equal educational opportunity and non‑discrimination policy.
  • Perform other job‑related duties as assigned.
  • Qualifications and Requirements
    • Minimum Qualifications:
      • 48 undergraduate college credits, or
      • Meeting or exceeding the state‑determined passing score of 464 on the Paraprofessional (Para Pro) Assessment or the Work Keys Assessment.
    • Preferred Qualifications:
      • Non‑violent crisis intervention trained.
      • Demonstrated experience supporting students with special needs.
      • Ability to speak Albanian, Arabic, Nepali, Portuguese, Spanish, Vietnamese, an African language, or American Sign Language.
    Work Year

    School‑year position: 180 pupil days, 3 days of professional development, and 6 additional hours of staff meeting time.

    Work Day

    6 hours plus a 30‑minute unpaid lunch.

    Salary and Stipend

    Salary determined by the Educational Association of Worcester Para educator Bargaining Unit step and lane placement. Secondary school assignment adds an 18‑minute stipend (5% of established salary). Contractual Subseparate stipend of $1,000, prorated and paid at the end of each school year.
