Job Description

This position is accountable for providing assistance to the classroom teacher and other certified personnel to support the instruction of all students—including those with emotional regulation and behavior challenges, mild to moderate to severe special needs, and general education students. The assistant facilitates educational access for students with disabilities using sound judgment and state regulations. Patience, perseverance, creativity, and a genuine desire to help all students succeed are essential.

The role may involve working with student populations such as Autism (AU), Creative Opportunities for Adolescents of Secondary Tier (COAST), Language Achievement and Beyond (LAB), Specialized Approaches to Individual Learning (SAIL), Structured Therapeutic Education Program (STEP), and Transitional Life Skills.

Essential Job Functions
  • Assist the classroom teacher by reviewing, correcting, and reinforcing lessons with individuals and small groups of students in all content areas, as defined in each student’s IEP or 504 plan.
  • Assist in the preparation, inventory, and maintenance of instructional materials and classroom learning aids.
  • Supervise breakfast and/or lunch periods, assemblies, and clean up of work areas.
  • Assist with clerical work such as recording daily attendance, cataloging, and filing instructional materials.
  • Participate in weekly, monthly, and long‑range planning with the classroom teacher, including special events, field trips, and school‑wide activities.
  • Maintain open communication during the work day under teacher or administrator supervision.
  • Maintain student confidentiality and provide an environment free from harassment and discrimination.
  • Supervise and support students in structured and unstructured activities across all school environments.
  • Contribute to a warm and open atmosphere that promotes student growth.
  • Serve as a guiding source of information and assist substitute teachers during absences.
  • Implement district and school‑wide rules, policies, and individual behavior plans.
  • Perform duties in specialty areas and special projects requiring specialized training.
  • Perform duty work such as lunch, recess, line, and bus supervision when required by the Building Principal.
  • Participate in non‑violent crisis intervention training within the first year of employment.
  • Collect data in accordance with students’ learning goals and objectives.
  • Implement behavior intervention plans and behavior management strategies to reduce problem behavior.
  • Support students’ physical and personal care needs, including toileting, diapering, feeding, and lifting.
  • Participate in professional development specific to the administration of assessments and accommodations.
  • Adhere to the district’s equal educational opportunity and non‑discrimination policy.
  • Perform any other job‑related duties as assigned.
  • Qualifications and Requirements
    • Minimum Qualifications: 48 undergraduate college credits or a passing score of 464 on the Paraprofessional (Para Pro) or Work Keys assessment.
    • Preferred Qualifications: Non‑violent crisis intervention training, demonstrated experience supporting students with special needs, and proficiency in Albanian, Arabic, Nepali, Portuguese, Spanish, Vietnamese, an African language, or American Sign Language.

    Work Year: 180 pupil days, 3 days of professional development, and 6 additional hours of staff meeting time.

    Work Day: 6 hours, plus a 30‑minute unpaid lunch.

    Salary: Determined by step and lane placement on the para educator salary schedule. Assignment to a secondary school adds an 18‑minute stipend, 5% of the base salary.

    Stipend: Contractual Subseparate stipend of $1,000, prorated and paid at the end of each school year.
