The History Department at the College of the Holy Cross invites applications from qualified candidates for appointment as the inaugural George and Bernice Wyss Phillipp Professor of History
. Endowed professorships are among the highest honors at the College. We seek a historian with a record of distinguished scholarly achievement and with demonstrated research and teaching expertise in the History of Science and/or the History of Medicine
. The Wyss Phillipp Professor will have the academic qualifications for appointment as a tenured full professor in the Department of History at the College of the Holy Cross.
The successful candidate will be expected to:
Responsibilities- Maintain an active research agenda and internationally significant academic profile.
- Design interdisciplinary courses, mentor students across programs, and help broaden the curriculum in the history of science and/or medicine within the liberal arts by building bridges across disciplines.
- Take full part in College and departmental service obligations.
- Demonstrated excellence in undergraduate teaching, including the use of evidence-based teaching strategies and course designs to create inclusive classroom environments where all students feel valued and can flourish.
- Record of distinguished scholarly achievement in the History of Science and/or History of Medicine.
- Prepared to serve as a tenured full professor in the Department of History.
The teaching load for this position is three courses per year. The base salary range for appointments beginning in August 2027 is $165,000 to $172,000, with nationally competitive benefits. A dedicated research and professional development account is associated with the Professorship. Sabbatical leave and research support policies are also nationally competitive.
