Job Description

TITLE:

Staff Assistant, Costume Shop Supervisor (9‑month position)
SUPERVISION RECEIVED: Chairperson of the Visual and Performing Arts Department
SUPERVISION EXERCISED: The Department Chair will meet with the Theatre Costume Designer and will confer with the Theatre Costume Designer and members of the Theatre area faculty as needed regarding the performance of the Designer's duties.

General Statement of Duties: The Theatre Costume Supervisor will supervise the costume shop in the theatre area of the Visual and Performing Arts Department and/or mentor student designers for VPA Theatre area productions. This is a 9‑month position with a 12‑week non‑service period from May through August.

Responsibilities

(E) = Essential

  • (E) Build and/or purchase costumes and accessories for theatre productions.
  • (E) Mentor, advise costume emphatic students in costume design/crafts assignments on main stage and capstone projects.
  • (E) Oversee the execution of the costumes and accessories.
  • (E) Supervise students, work‑study students and over‑hire workers when needed.
  • (E) Maintain above items and has equipment serviced as needed.
  • (E) Maintain an open but efficient, collaborative atmosphere for a diverse group of stakeholders.
  • (E) Drapes, pattern drafts, cuts, designs, makeup and hair, and teach said skills to emphatic students.
  • (E) Demonstrate civility and professional, customer‑service‑oriented behavior, worthy of emulation by other staff and students.
  • (E) Responsible for contributing to the WSU Strategic Plan.
  • (E) Responsible for contributing to Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action objectives.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Requirements

    Required Qualifications:

    • Strong costume shop skills, including research, conceptualization, sketching and rendering.
    • Good collaborative skills.
    • Strong organizational and time‑management skills.
    • Ability to work flexible and extended hours. Occasional nights and weekends may be required based on the department's production calendar.
    Additional Information

    This is a full‑time, benefited, exempt, professional APA position. The firm annual salary range for this position is $50,000–$55,000, commensurate with relevant professional experience and education. Worcester State University recommends that all employees be vaccinated against COVID‑19 before they begin employment.
