Mass Audubon is the largest nature-based conservation organization in New England. With the help of our 160,000 members and supporters, we protect wildlife, conserve and restore resilient land, advocate for impactful environmental policies, offer nationally recognized education programs for adults and children, and provide endless opportunities to experience the outdoors at our wildlife sanctuaries.

We are seeking field teachers to help with weekday, weekend, and evening public, school, and family programs at Broad Meadow Brook and Wachusett Meadow Wildlife Sanctuaries. Our public and group programs engage learners of all ages in hikes and nature exploration at our sanctuaries. All our programs align with state and national science standards and encourage exploration, collaboration, and inquiry. Field teachers help with programs at one or both sites in Mass Audubon's Central Region.

Responsibilities:

• Facilitate and lead school program participants in hands-on nature-based learning experiences at Mass Audubon Wildlife sanctuaries and at school and program sites
• Maintain educational supplies, curricula, materials, and resources
• Assist with the planning and development of new programs and activities as needed
• Monitor program participants in all types of indoor and outdoor environments and ensure the safety and comfort of all participants
• Become familiar with and teach a variety of environmental educational activities
• Engage participants in hands-on learning that develop ecology and conservation knowledge
• Assist in setting up before and cleaning up after programs
• Travel to various sites throughout Central Massachusetts to facilitate programming

We are looking for applicants with the following qualifications:

Must Haves:

• At least 18 years of age
• A love of nature and teaching outdoors
• Interest and experience with natural history, environmental education and/or science education
• Strong organizational, time management, oral, and written communication skills
• Experience in customer service or childcare and excellent interpersonal skills
• Skills and ability to work with diverse groups, exercise cultural humility, and implement best practices in inclusion
• Demonstrate a positive attitude and work collaboratively as a positive contributor to the team

Nice to Haves:

• Knowledge of local natural history, conservation, and environmental education
• Familiarity with culturally responsive teaching or other equity-based pedagogy
• Experience delivering urban environmental education programming or equivalent
• Flexibility and ability to adapt programming to fit each group's needs
• First Aid and CPR (child and adult) certification

Compensation, Benefits and Perks:
This position's pay range is $19.00-$20.00 per hour; actual rate of pay will reflect level of experience and qualifications relative to position requirements. This is not a benefits eligible position.

Work Schedule:

This position begins in August 2026 and ends in June 2027. Hours may vary weekly, ranging from 0 to 20. Hours are contingent on program bookings and registration by groups, schools, and participants. Exact schedule will be determined weekly and received 10 days before the given week for planning purposes. Weekend, evening, and weekday hours are available.

Other Requirements:
Employees must successfully complete a CORI and SORI Background Check and a Motor Vehicle Record (if applicable) is required.
