Basic Function
This role has two distinct areas of oversight at Clark University:
The American Language and Culture Institute (ALCI) and the Hefei University of Technology (HFUT) Collaborative Programs. ALCI is responsible for providing ESL instruction and support to all English Language Learners in Clark University's programs as well as academic, social and cultural support to ELLs on campus. HFUT Collaborative Programs includes Academic programs on HFUT's campus in Hefei China and Summer programs on Clark's campus in Worcester.
The director of ALCI oversees all aspects of ALCI programs by managing and creating English and cultural programs that enhance Clark's curriculum and attract new students to the university. The Director also collaborates with Undergraduate and Graduate Admissions offices on marketing and recruitment efforts, reviews borderline case applications for language proficiency, sits on various University committees and represents the needs of the ELL population.
The Director maintains the ALCI program budget, completes budget forecasts and monitors expenses and revenue.
The director of the HFUT Collaborative Programs serves as the programs' primary point person and project manager. This includes the oversight of faculty hiring and instructional quality, liaising with HFUT staff to identify issues and provide options of solutions, identifying new means for collaboration, and working with the Associate Dean and Director of Global Engagement and Clark University offices to ensure alignment with strategic goals and bring to fruition.
The Director of HFUT Collaborative Programs also manages the annual HFUT Summer Program in Worcester.
- Direct current English as a Second Language (ESL) domestic and international programs, by managing the delivery of the programs and providing organizational oversight.
- Manage academic processes such as course scheduling, student placement testing, course registration, and matriculation into program upon completion of ALCI programs.
- Define implement, and conduct regular reviews of student learning outcomes and program goals, to ensure alignment with the ALCI mission and trends in the field.
- Utilize data from student-centered assessments to drive continuous improvement in teaching, learning, and overall student satisfaction.
- Lead and manage a diverse team of ALCI faculty;
Oversee the hiring, training, and performance evaluation of all faculty. - Provide expert instructional leadership informed by best practices in the TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) field.
- Manage the ALCI operational budget, including providing budget forecasts, recommending and making purchasing decisions.
- With the Admission and Recruitment offices, develop and execute the marketing and recruitment plan for all ALCI programs.
- Serve as a representative of the University, conducting international market research at educational fairs to inform and recommend new ESOL program development.
- Develop and champion market-driven innovative programs in coordination with relevant campus stakeholders.
- Oversee student support services related to successfully living and learning at Clark University, including the development and delivery of workshops, orientation, and follow-up sessions.
- Review and analyze instructor and program evaluation data shared by HFUT and communicate return eligibility to faculty.
- Oversee the hiring process for instructors including determining course coverage needs, ensuring job descriptions are accurate and posted in a timely manner, reviewing applications, and in coordination with HFUT and Clark's academic units, interview and make final faculty selections.
- Serve as Clark's primary point of contact for instructors regarding contracts and salary negotiations.
- Coordinate with HFUT on invitation letters, visa documents, arrival logistics, and accommodation requests for dispatched Clark faculty.
