Fire Protection Engineer
Leidos is seeking a Fire Protection Engineer (fire life safety expertise) to join the National Airspace System Integration Support Contract (NISC) team.
The role requires experience in Fire Life Safety/Fire Protection and is open to an EIT working toward a Professional Engineer (PE) license.
The engineer will support the Federal Aviation Administration’s (FAA) Fire Life Safety Program, including code and standards analysis, policy development, training, condition risk assessments (CRA), and stairwell pressurization engine generator (EG) replacement. The position will assist the Environmental Occupational Safety and Health (EOSH) Services Group in improving Fire Life Safety program elements to protect employees and ensure compliance with federal, state, and FAA regulations.
Location& Travel
Remote position. Up to 50% travel within the central United States. Candidates are preferred to be located anywhere within the central US.
Responsibilities- Assist with development of FLS code and standards analyses.
- Provide guidance on applicability of codes and standards to FAA facilities and mission-specific items.
- Offer FLS guidance on program and agency initiatives where the FLS program is a stakeholder.
- Develop technical guidance on design and construction issues.
- Assist with standard specifications for FAA facility installations.
- Participate in FLS programmatic planning initiatives, prioritization, and consultation on program direction and goals.
- Author white papers, proposals, and analysis papers on relevant items.
- Conduct comprehensive fire protection and life safety surveys of critical air traffic control facilities: ATCT, TRACON, ARTCC, and other FAA‑supporting facilities, evaluating them against IBC, NFPA 101, NFPA 13, NFPA 20, NFPA 72, NFPA 75, and other applicable codes and FAA orders.
- Evaluate facility human element programs for OSHA‑required Emergency Action Plans, Fire Prevention Plans, fire drills, and inspection, testing and maintenance of fire protection and life safety systems.
- Coordinate with customers on site visits, scheduling, and impact assessment.
- Maintain current schedule of CRAs, including dates, locations, status, and team assignments.
- Provide additional CRA support as requested by the AJW‑23 Program Manager.
- Bachelor’s degree with 4+ years of relevant exempt experience, or Master’s degree with 2+ years of relevant exempt experience.
- Professional Engineer license or EIT certificate.
- Strong knowledge of applicable ICC and NFPA codes.
- Experience developing or advising on FLS programs.
- Ability to produce FLS designs for critical elements and provide design critiques.
- Experience training on FLS concepts and code application.
- Ability to obtain a Public Trust clearance.
- Experience with FAA National Airspace System facilities or similar government installations.
- Experience with 29 CFR 1960.20.
- Experience with programs at federal agencies, especially FAA.
- Training on use/maintenance of fire protection systems.
