Senior Project Manager – Transportation (Major/Mega Projects)

VHB has been named a U.S. Best Managed Company for 2026 and is seeking a Senior Project Manager to lead the delivery of complex and mega transportation projects across Massachusetts and New England.

As VHB’s growth continues, the Massachusetts Highway and Structures Team needs a leader to manage multidisciplinary teams of 10-30+ engineers, planners, and specialists on highway corridor improvements, bridges, rail modernization, and airport infrastructure using both traditional and alternative procurement.

The role will guide major pursuits and collaborate directly with public agency clients, supporting strategic pursuits and business development across the region.

Responsibilities
  • Lead high-visibility pursuits and deliver complex transportation infrastructure projects for public transportation agencies across Massachusetts and New England.
  • Lead multidisciplinary teams of engineers, planners, and specialists in the planning, analysis, design, and delivery of highway, bridge, rail, transit, and airport infrastructure projects.
  • Oversee projects from strategic positioning and proposal development through award, conceptual design, final design, and construction support.
  • Provide leadership for project execution including scope development, technical approach, schedule, budget management, and quality performance.
  • Direct and mentor technical staff in the preparation of engineering designs, plans, specifications, cost estimates, reports, and bid documents.
  • Serve as a primary technical liaison with clients, subconsultants, and contractors, representing VHB in project meetings and technical discussions.
  • Support construction coordination by providing design guidance, addressing constructability considerations, and assisting with technical issue resolution during construction.
  • Develop and maintain strong client relationships and support strategic pursuits and business development efforts across the region.
  • Contribute to the growth of the transportation practice through mentorship, collaboration across disciplines, and participation in strategic planning and major pursuits.
  • Promote VHB’s standards for technical excellence, project management, risk management, and quality delivery.
Skills and Attributes
  • Superb technical and critical thinking skills and interdisciplinary understanding.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills.
  • Self‑motivated, highly organized, and detail‑oriented.
  • Familiarity with transportation design platforms such as Bentley Open Roads, AutoCAD, Revit, and similar platforms.
  • Model‑Based Design development and coordination experience and strong understanding.
  • Experience supporting integrated project delivery and schedule coordination tools is a plus.
  • Strong understanding of local regulations, code, and design guides.
Minimum Qualifications
  • 15+ years of civil or structural engineering experience.
  • BS in Civil Engineering (transportation or structural emphasis preferred).
  • Master’s degree a plus (counts toward years of experience).
  • Massachusetts Professional Engineer licensure (licensure in other New England or other states is a strong plus only in addition to Massachusetts).
  • Mid-to-large scale traditional and design-build complex transportation project management and construction support experience required, including past experience in the role of design manager or deputy design manager.
  • Experience working with public transportation agencies such as MassDOT, MBTA, Massport, or similar regional agencies is preferred.

Salary range:
Boston/Watertown, MA – $170,000 to $230,000;
Worcester, MA – $160,000 to $220,000. Final compensation will be based on qualifications, education, and experience.
