Description and ContextEquity and respect are part of UMass Memorial Health. This position is within the Lab Support Technician I role in the Central Processing area. The description includes routine laboratory support duties, data entry, and adherence to quality and safety policies as part of daily responsibilities.

Responsibilities- Perform routine procedures involving collection, receiving, triaging and processing of laboratory requisitions and specimens, including logging specimens, sorting requisitions, and assisting in laboratory processes.
- Receive specimens from couriers and verify appropriate counts; assign accession numbers to specimens and requisitions.
- Sort and triage requisitions and specimens to the appropriate workstation; complete and file manifests.
- Answer telephones and communicate pertinent information.
- Send specimens and carriers to various sites using pneumatic tube or dumbwaiter; perform minor troubleshooting of pneumatic tube systems via computer.
- Process specimens including centrifugation, pour-off, aliquoting and labeling.
- Register short form outreach specimens received from clients.
- Assist in routine laboratory duties such as preparing reagents and stains, preparing slides and specimens, drawing blood, autoclaving and washing glassware, disposing of biohazardous waste, and collecting occasional outreach specimens.
- Maintain inventory for the assigned area and ensure adequate supplies; monitor and store equipment and supplies in an orderly manner.
- Maintain accurate records of processes performed using manual and computer-based systems; log errors for specimens received without proper tubes or requisitions.
- Comply with laboratory quality, health and safety policies, regulations and procedures and department objectives.
License/Certification/
Education:
Required:
High School graduate; familiarity with data entry and/or word processing and medical terminology.
Equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted for the above requirements if appropriate for the responsibilities listed.
Additional DetailsSchedule Details:
Holidays – Every Third Holiday;
Weekends (Saturday and Sunday). Scheduled
Hours:
3pm-11:30pm; 3 sets of Saturdays and Sundays per month, with rotating 4-hour or 8-hour shifts;
Monday through Friday shift as needed by the department. Shift: Evening, 8 Hours (U.S.)
