Schedule:
Holidays (one major summer and one major winter), Sundays through Saturdays
Hours:
mixed shifts, 8‑hour shifts
Cost Center: 10010 – 0704 Maternity Center
- Provide clear, timely communication to the RN regarding observations and changes seen in patients (e.g., skin condition, vital signs, mental status).
- Provide constant observation of high‑risk patients as assigned.
- Participate in the development and maintenance of a safe environment, utilizing interventions to de‑escalate patients and, if necessary, participate in restraints per training.
- Assist patients with daily living activities such as personal hygiene, ambulation, meals, and nourishment.
- Assist in moving, lifting, positioning, and transporting patients using proper safety techniques and body mechanics.
- Maintain patient safety by performing patient safety checks, applying fall prevention strategies, and following the Restraint Policy for restrained patients.
- Take and record vital signs (temperature, pulse, respiration, blood pressure, pulse oxymetry) and measure patient height and weight.
- Perform EKGs, Point of Care (POC) tests, bladder scanning, collect, label, and prepare specimens for transport to the lab.
- Perform phlebotomy where required.
- Carry out unit‑specific procedures (e.g., telemetry battery changes, equipment checks, cleaning between patients).
- Assist RN/Licensed Independent Practitioner with treatments and procedures, preparing patients, setting up equipment, positioning patients, providing emotional support, and cleaning up afterward.
- Observe, measure, and record oral food and fluid intake; set up tube feeding solutions, refill bags, record output from Foley catheters, ostomy appliances, drainage systems, and perform ostomy care on established patients.
- Demonstrate sensitivity and responsiveness to patient needs, building positive rapport and relationships.
- Provide respectful, culturally and age‑appropriate communication with patients, staff, family, visitors, and others.
- Replenish patient and unit supplies and equipment as needed.
- Seek assistance from identified resources when additional direction is required.
- Stay current with hospital and unit changes by reviewing communication boards, bulletin boards, posted notices, and responding to UMMHC emails regularly.
- Precept new Patient Care Technicians when required.
- Comply with established departmental policies, procedures, and objectives.
- Attend meetings, conferences, and seminars as required.
- Demonstrate use of Quality Improvement in daily operations.
- Comply with all health and safety regulations.
- Respect diverse views and approaches, demonstrating Standards of Respect and contributing to a professional, tolerant, civil, and accepting environment.
- Maintain regular, reliable, and predictable attendance.
- Perform other related duties as required or directed.
- Minimum of a high school education or GED.
- Current Basic Life Support certification (required within 30 days of employment).
- Demonstrated competency at the Patient Care Technician I level, with at least 800 hours and a minimum of 6 months as a PCT I, or 6 months of prior inpatient/outpatient direct patient care experience.
- Ability to read, write, and communicate in English clearly and concisely.
- Knowledge of medical terminology.
- Basic computer skills.
- Strong interpersonal skills for gathering information, building relationships, and providing exceptional patient service.
- Proven problem‑solving abilities for routine situations.
- Ability to remain calm under stress or in emergency situations.
Work is indoors in a patient care environment. Requires hand dexterity, hearing, and vision to follow directions. Must lift up to 50 pounds, stand and walk most of the time, and may need to push heavy equipment and bend frequently.
