About the Job

NOTICE
- This job is an hourly version of our existing salaried role. This version of the job should only be used for employees below the government-mandated, minimum FLSA pay threshold. All other employees should be placed in the salaried version of this role. This position is for students enrolled in a Doctor of Audiology degree program.

Responsibilities include directly supervised audiological assessment and management of hearing loss for children. Additional responsibilities include providing consultation to medical, allied health and educational personnel and education/instruction to patients, families, and other healthcare providers under direct supervision and with the assistance of a licensed audiologist, as appropriate. The extern participates in and completes the requirements for the hospital’s interdisciplinary Leadership Education in Neurodevelopmental Disabilities (LEND) Program.

Beginning July 2027 , appointment as an extern is for one year (12 months) with no guarantee of employment by Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia beyond the one-year extern appointment.

What you will do
  • Patient Care
    • 1. Evaluation:
      • Under the direct supervision of a licensed sponsor/supervisor who meets supervision requirements of the Audiology department, as well as the degree-granting institution:
      • Assesses hearing and/or vestibular function through the use of diagnostic tests and other appropriate procedures, in compliance with guidelines set by the department and regulating agencies.
      • Applies proper knowledge, methods, and techniques using specific diagnostic equipment.
    • 2. Documentation and Communication:
      • Under the direct supervision of a licensed sponsor/supervisor who meets supervision requirements of the Audiology department, as well as the degree-granting institution:
      • Interprets test findings with prompt dissemination of results using professional oral and written communication.
      • Aids physicians and other providers in the diagnosis and treatment of peripheral and central auditory disorders.
      • Counsels patients and families, as well as other professionals regarding hearing loss and options for (re) habilitation including, but not limited to hearing technology, communication options and educational services through the use of outcomes measures and referrals to appropriate service providers.
    • 3. Intervention:
      • Under the direct supervision of a licensed sponsor/supervisor who meets supervision requirements of the Audiology department, as well as the degree-granting institution:
      • Develops recommendations for management of hearing loss in accordance with departmental protocols.
      • Selects, modifies, and dispenses amplification systems, cochlear implants and other assistive devices when appropriate.
      • Develops informational materials for families and professionals when appropriate.
  • Administration
    • Reports problems/shortages with consignment technology, capital instrumentation and operating supplies to senior staff.
    • Maintains a record of clinical activity and submits information to primary supervisor(s) on at least monthly basis.
    • Maintains professional conduct in accordance with ethical, professional, and procedural standards as set by academic program, department policy and state/federal regulatory agencies.
