Position Overview

Under the direction of the Sterile Processing Leadership Team, an SPD Tech will perform decontamination, inspection/assembly, high‑level disinfection (HLD)/sterilization, sterile storage, and distribution of instruments, devices and medical equipment across the UMass Network. The role requires maintaining a clean, safe workspace, adhering to infection control and safety practices, and meeting quotas for instrument flow.

Sign‑On Bonus

USD 1,500 sign‑on bonus is available. A Talent Acquisition Consultant will discuss eligibility during the recruitment process.

SPD Tech I Responsibilities
  • Decontamination – collect, receive, and record soiled instruments/equipment, use equipment, tools, solutions and personal protective equipment in a prescribed manner, maintain a clean workspace.
  • Inspection/Assembly – inspect for cleanliness and proper functioning, assemble, package and record instruments/devices, maintain a clean workspace.
  • Sterilization/HLD – record and route instruments for proper sterilization or HLD, perform process/cycle, monitor and record routine safety/efficacy testing, maintain a clean workspace.
  • Sterile Storage – ensure proper inventory, rotation and distribution of instruments, devices, equipment, supplies and carts, assemble and distribute supplies as needed, maintain a clean workspace.
SPD Tech I Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Completion of or enrollment in an accredited Central Sterile Processing Technician program.
  • Certification as a Certified and Registered Central Sterile Processing Technician within one year of employment (failure to obtain certification will result in termination).
  • Knowledge of sterilization standards/procedures and associated terminology.
  • Proficiency with basic computer functions.
SPD Tech II Responsibilities
  • Charge tech to entry‑level staff; precept to ensure work quality meets department standards.
  • Internal inventory responsibilities, including supplies, backup stock, and expiration process to reduce defect resolution issues.
  • Backlog oversight – assist in prioritization, distribution and completion of trays to reduce backlog.
SPD Tech II Qualifications
  • 2 years’ experience in Sterile Processing as a Certified and Registered Central Sterile Processing Technician.
  • Current Certified Registered Sterile Processing Technician certification.
  • Current Certified Instrument Specialist advanced certification.
  • Minimum of one year in Sterile Processing as a Certified and Registered Central Sterile Processing Technician with UMass CSPD (preferred).
  • Knowledge of sterilization standards/procedures and Central Service‑related terminology.
  • Proficiency with basic computer functions.
