Position Overview

Schedule:

Monday through Friday, 8:30–4:30, 1-Day Shift, 40 hours per week, Cost Center: 99940 – 6172 Human Resources Labor Relation

Major Responsibilities
  • Represent UMass Memorial Health Care in collective bargaining with unions representing employees throughout the medical center system; prepare for, conduct, and/or participate in contract negotiations and administer all provisions of the agreements.
  • Interpret union–management agreements, administer all provisions, and represent management in negotiation and settlement of grievances under established procedures; consult with managers and recommend day‑to‑day and strategic labor‑relations actions.
  • Assist in planning and organizing employee and labor‑relations programs to build a positive work environment, prevent disputes, and mediate grievances; provide formal and informal education to all levels of management on labor relations, contract interpretation, and labor and employment law.
  • Lead sensitive and confidential workplace investigations and draft investigative reports as appropriate.
  • Contribute to a harmonious labor‑management environment through equitable policies, procedures, and programs that enable effective problem solving.
  • Ensure appropriate processing of arbitrations, oversee outside legal counsel, and lead preparation and oversight of arbitrations and mediations.
  • Assist managers and others with interpretation of personnel policies, legal and union contract compliance, grievance, discipline, termination, and mediation; draft and revise personnel policies as needed.
Position Qualifications License/Certification/Education
  • Required: Bachelor’s degree in business‑related field;
    Juris Doctor
  • Preferred: Master’s degree in business‑related field
Experience/Skill
  • Required: At least five years of direct experience in labor relations; demonstrated experience as chief spokesperson in union contract negotiations.
  • In‑depth knowledge of collective bargaining, state and federal labor and employment law.
  • Extensive knowledge of the union grievance process and preparing for arbitrations.
  • Knowledge of the National Labor Relations Act and NLRB procedures.
  • Preferred: Substantive and demonstrated experience working in unionized environments with MNA, UFCW, NAGE, AFSME, and SEIU.
