General Summary
Under the general direction of the Dean, Provost and Executive Deputy Chancellor (Dean/Provost), University of Massachusetts Chan Medical School, the Chief of Staff to the Dean/Provost (Chief of Staff) is responsible for assisting the Dean/Provost in the administration of the Office of the Dean/Provost. The Chief of Staff works directly with the Dean/Provost and UMass Chan administration on the range of issues facing the School.
The Chief of Staff handles various complex, time‑sensitive issues that cross public, organizational and academic dimensions. The Chief of Staff also oversees administrative operations in the office of the Dean/Provost, including budget development, workflow and communications, scheduling and agendas, preparation of briefing materials, and correspondence.
- Directs the administration and operations of the Office of the Dean/Provost.
- Assists the Dean/Provost with management of direct reports and with the budget of the academic departments and centers as well as the programs and institutes that fall under the responsibility of the Dean/Provost.
- Assists with the oversight of 28 Chairs, 3 Vice Provosts, 2 Senior Associate Deans, 2 other deans, and 2 other Center and Institute Directors.
- Prepares agendas and determines priorities in collaboration with the Dean/Provost.
- Works closely and collaboratively with the UMMS and UMMHC leadership.
- Participates in strategic planning, annual budget preparation and hearings, and quarterly financial performance meetings.
- Oversees communications between the Office of the Dean/Provost and UMMS administration to ensure timely response on key issues.
- Oversees communication between the Dean/Provost and the Dean/Provosts leadership team to ensure effective operations and compliance with academic and/or business objectives.
- Troubleshoots issues from internal constituencies (faculty, residents, students, staff, etc.).
- Directs the preparation of briefing reports, prepared by Dean/Provost’s Office staff, to include priority news items, scheduling priorities, key issues and status of leadership initiatives.
- Oversees various complex projects and initiatives on behalf of the Dean/Provost.
- Oversees budget development, workflow and communications, scheduling and agendas, preparation of briefing materials, and correspondence for the Office of the Dean/Provost.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- Bachelor’s Degree in Business, Public Administration, Public Health, Health Care Administration or related field or equivalent;
Master’s Degree in Public Health (MPH), Public Administration (MPA), or Business Administration (MBA) preferred. - 7–10 years of significant management experience in higher education, health care or not-for-profit field.
- Significant experience as a Department Academic Administrator at a top-tier Medical School.
- Experience facilitating the work of faculty at a top-tier Medical School.
- Strong communication skills as evidenced by preparation of oral and written materials including presentations, proposals, reports and memoranda both technical and confidential in nature.
- Capacity to manage complex operational priorities.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Experience working effectively with multiple constituencies.
- High level of diplomacy, discretion, and problem‑solving skills required.
- Knowledge of academic and health care arenas preferred.

At UMass Chan Medical School, final base salary offers are determined based on a combination of factors, including your skills, education, and relevant experience. We also consider internal equity to ensure fair and consistent compensation across our teams.
Please note that the range provided reflects the full base salary range for this position. Offers are typically made within the midrange to allow for future growth and development within the role.
