Boston College Introduction

Founded in 1863, Boston College is a Jesuit, Catholic university located six miles from downtown Boston with an enrollment of 9,654 full-time undergraduates and 5,072 graduate and professional students. Ranked 37 among national universities, Boston College has 923 full-time and 1,336 FTE faculty, 2,822 non-faculty employees, an operating budget of $1.4 billion, and an endowment in excess of $3.9 billion.

Job Description

As we approach the fourth year of the public phase of Soaring Higher: the Campaign for Boston College, we invite you to join our community. Driven by our mission in ways that advance the university for years to come, priority areas for this $3B comprehensive campaign include Financial Aid, Academics, and Student Life.

Based on a fundamental Jesuit tenet of developing the whole person, University Advancement is large enough to benefit from many campus resources, yet small enough to be agile and creative in supporting all associates. With an average tenure of close to 10 years at Boston College, our 250-person centralized organizational structure offers a variety of roles across fundraising, alumni relations, operations, and communications and engagement.

We invest in the professional growth of every staff member through individual and team-based programs. Likewise, we aim to attract the very best, seeking team members who are as ambitious and as committed to our team as we are.

We value a culture of diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging while actively promoting team members who contribute to the success of University Advancement.

Director of Advancement Communications and Marketing

The Director of Advancement Communications and Marketing oversees the strategic direction and operations of the Advancement Communications and Marketing (ACM) team and provides leadership for all of University Advancement's (UA) marketing and communications efforts. The Director ensures a cohesive, audience-centered approach that strengthens the University's relationships with alumni, donors, and other key constituents that support the division's fundraising and engagement goals.

Reporting to the Associate Vice President of Advancement Operations & Planning, the Director is responsible for the supervision and direction of five senior associate directors who collectively supervise 22 professionals. The Director leads the vision, strategy, and performance of communications and marketing across development and alumni audiences, aligning storytelling, design and branding, channel strategy, and marketing/audience data in a unified, high-impact operation.

The Director operates at a high level, balancing long-term strategy, partnering with other UA leaders and peers, and coordinating across campus.

Primary Duties

Strategic leadership

  • Defines and leads the long-term vision for ACM, aligned to UA priorities.
  • Oversees the integration of communications, creative, marketing strategy, marketing technology, and digital insights into a single, cohesive function.
  • Collaborates with the AVP, Office of University Communications on a regular basis.

Team Leadership and Culture

  • Builds and leads a high-performing ACM leadership team aligned around shared goals, clear expectations, and collective accountability.

Overall Communication and Marketing Strategy

  • Works collaboratively across the division to define fundraising and engagement objectives for the year ahead.
  • Responsible for the quality and effectiveness of all alumni and donor communications across UA-owned channels and touchpoints.
  • Ensures a cohesive narrative ecosystem— from campaign storytelling to annual giving to alumni engagement— that reflects BC's priorities and resonates with each audience.
  • Directly oversees how major institutional moments (campaign milestones, principal gifts, presidential transition, key initiatives) are communicated to alumni and donors.

Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis. The salary range for this position is listed below, with the final salary based on various factors, including the candidate's qualifications, skills, competencies, experience, and internal equity considerations.
