Overview
The Committee for Public Counsel Service (CPCS), Mental Health Litigation Division (MHLD) is a group of passionate attorneys dedicated to advocating for individuals involuntarily detained at hospitals due to mental illness. This VISTA role focuses on building community engagement and partnering with peer advocacy groups to provide legal support, organize annual Know Your Rights events, and pilot re‑entry support groups for those transitioning from hospitalization.
Responsibilities- Coordinate partnerships with lawyers, social service advocates, and individuals facing involuntary hospitalization and court‑ordered medication orders.
- Attend training courses on Massachusetts civil commitment and court‑ordered medication procedures.
- Collaborate with formerly involuntarily hospitalized individuals, lawyers, and peer communities to organize a Fall 2026 Know Your Rights event.
- Launch a pilot re‑entry support group with existing peer advocacy groups for individuals transitioning from the hospital to the community.
- Coordinate with legal community, support groups, and volunteers to deliver services to individuals transitioning back to the community after hospitalization.
