Clinical Nurse Specialist, Nurse Practitioner
UMass Memorial Medical Center is seeking a highly skilled and compassionate Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant to join our Hematology/Oncology Division in an Acute Care/Urgent Care Advanced Practice Provider (APP) role. This position is ideal for an experienced oncology APP who thrives in a fast-paced, complex clinical environment and values autonomy, collaboration, and high-impact patient care.
Position OverviewThe Acute Care/Urgent Care APP functions as a generalist across hematologic malignancies, solid tumor oncology, and infusion services. This new role is designed to provide real-time clinical triage, urgent patient evaluation, and operational support for attending physicians, infusion services, and outpatient oncology clinics.
Serving as a first-call provider for patient concerns, this APP independently manages urgent evaluations, supports infusion-related complexity, provides flexible clinic coverage, and enhances access to timely oncology care. The role requires advanced clinical judgment, strong prioritization skills, and the ability to manage multiple competing demands while maintaining a patient-centered approach.
Major Responsibilities Urgent / Acute Oncology Care- Perform same-day and urgent clinical evaluations for oncology patients
- Provide rapid triage and management of acute symptoms and treatment-related complications
- Coordinate care escalation when needed
- Serve as APP backup support for infusion clinics
- Assist with infusion-related decision-making and complex clinical scenarios
- Enhance workflow efficiency and patient throughput
- Provide flexible clinical coverage across oncology clinics
- Support attending physicians with patient management and care coordination
- Improve access, reduce delays, and optimize team capacity
- Structured onboarding program with week-by-week guided learning
- Comprehensive shadowing across urgent oncology care workflows and solid tumor and hematology infusion clinics
- Self-directed learning modules with knowledge assessments
- Progressive independence with ongoing mentorship and support
- Fast-paced, high-acuity hematology and oncology practice
- High level of professional autonomy within a collaborative team structure
- Role specifically designed to improve patient access and continuity of care
- Strong interdisciplinary collaboration among APPs, physicians, nurses, and pharmacists
- Graduate of an approved Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant program with certification and a Master's degree.
- Current Massachusetts NP or PA license.
- Massachusetts Controlled Substances Registration and federal DEA Controlled Substance Registration (if prescribing medications).
- Hematology/Oncology experience preferred.
