  • Current BLS (AHA/ARC) Certification

Summary

The Post/Pre-Op Registered Nurse provides specialized care to patients recovering from anesthesia and surgery. This role involves assessing patient health before and after surgery, implementing care plans, administering treatments, and collaborating with healthcare teams to ensure high‑quality, patient‑centered care. The Post/Pre‑Op RN ensures patient safety and comfort prior to and during the surgical recovery period, using advanced clinical skills, effective communication, and adherence to professional and regulatory standards.

Work Functions
  • Assesses patients pre‑operatively, including reviewing medical history, performing physical examinations, and identifying potential risks
  • Prepares patients for surgery, including educating them about procedures and post‑operative care
  • Receives and conducts comprehensive assessments of patients transferring from the operating room and assesses their post‑anesthesia condition
  • Monitors patients post‑operatively for complications and manages pain and recovery
  • Administers prescribed medications and treatments in accordance with approved nursing techniques
  • Maintains awareness of comfort and safety needs of patients in the perioperative setting
  • Observes and documents patient conditions, treatments, and significant incidents, and responds to anesthesia and treatments, notifying the care team of significant changes or adverse reactions
  • Takes temperature, pulse, blood pressure, and other vital signs to detect deviations from normal, assesses patient condition and responds appropriately
  • Responds promptly to emergency situations utilizing Pre/Post Op nursing standards, policies, procedures, and protocols
  • Accurately documents patient assessments, interventions, and recovery progress in medical records
  • Develops and delivers individualized patient and family education plans, including detailed discharge instructions and recovery guidelines
  • Collaborates with the surgical team and other healthcare providers to ensure comprehensive pre and post‑operative care
  • Participates in patient handoff communications to ensure continuity of care between units and departments
  • Operates and monitors pre and post op‑specific equipment, such as ventilators, monitors, and infusion pumps
  • Performs other duties as assigned within the scope of practice
  • Adheres to hospital safety protocols, infection control guidelines, and regulatory standards
Required Essential Skills
  • Critical thinking, service excellence and good interpersonal communication skills
  • Ability to read, write, & communicate in the English language
  • Ability to read/comprehend written instructions, follow verbal instructions, and proficiency in PC skills
  • Physical Abilities - Remain in a stationary position, move about, move equipment (50-100lbs), pushing, pulling, bending
  • Interpersonal Skills - To work effectively with a variety of personnel (professional and ancillary) to present a positive attitude and professionalism
  • Technical/Motor Skills - Ability to grasp, fine manipulation, pushing/pulling and be able to move about when assisting with procedures and/or using department equipment.
