Principal Research Scientist I (Analytical R&D for LNP and Small Molecule)

Full‑time. Job grade:
Workday Global Grade 19. Salary range: USD 124,500 – 236,500 per year.

Location:

Worcester, MA (mandatory 50% on‑site), Cambridge, MA (mandatory 50% on‑site).

Responsibilities
  • Apply analytical separation and detection methods for complex impurity profiling of pharmaceutical products to advise drug development.
  • Generate and lead new scientific proposals, evaluate scientific or regulatory advancements, and respond to competitive threats.
  • Demonstrate scientific initiative and creativity; maintain high lab productivity.
  • Encourage innovation, manage innovation to reality, and continuously improve processes.
  • Comply with Abb Vie safety, quality, regulatory policies and applicable government regulations.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s, Master’s or Ph.D. in Analytical Chemistry (or related field) with minimum 14, 12 or 6 years of industry experience respectively.
  • Strong technical background in analytical chemistry; capable of independently developing and troubleshooting analytical methods.
  • Leadership experience solving technical challenges across therapeutic modalities, especially in lipid nanoparticle (LNP) and small molecule spaces.
  • Experience with mass spectrometry instrumentation for structure elucidation and trace quantitation.
  • Fundamental knowledge of HPLC, UPLC, GC, DSC, TGA, DVS, PXRD, NMR, dissolution, and other analytical techniques.
  • Understanding of physicochemical properties in drug delivery and formulation design.
  • Knowledge of formulation approaches and routes of administration (IV, SC, IP, PO) across multiple species.
  • Knowledge of preclinical and clinical formulation development for lipid nanoparticle formulations.
  • Creative, self‑motivated, detail‑oriented, and able to work in a fast‑paced team environment.
  • High‑quality written and oral communication; ability to interact effectively with interdisciplinary scientists and engineers.

The compensation range described below is the range of possible base pay compensation that the Company believes in good faith it will pay for this role at the time of this posting based on the job grade for this position. Individual compensation paid within this range will depend on many factors including geographic location. The range may be modified in the future.
