The Department of Conservation and Recreation seeks applicants for an Environmental Analyst IV, Wachusett to perform the following duties:

General Statement of Duties and Responsibilities

Perform professional environmental analysis of the Wachusett Reservoir watershed to help locate and control sources of environmental pollutants in accordance with applicable laws, rules, regulations, standards, and sound environmental principles and practices. Perform various activities associated with environmental quality assessments including field inspections, water quality sampling, plan review, stormwater monitoring and mitigation of stormwater pollution, database development, data compilation and analysis, GIS mapping and data layer development, preparation of memos and reports, implementation of recommendations, workplan development and supervision of staff.

Statements of Duties and Responsibilities
  • Oversee and assist with all Wachusett Watershed tributary water quality, watershed hydrologic monitoring and Aquatic Biology programs.
  • Summarize and interpret water quality data and draft annual water quality reports.
  • Determine needs for future stormwater sampling based on analysis of historic data.
  • Identify and outline system-wide water quality issues and discuss at Reservoir Operations and WQSAT meetings.
  • Coordinate production of annual written and verbal water quality summary for DEP inspection.
  • Maintain HOBO sensor stations and establish Mayfly stations. Ensure regular discharge measurements are collected as needed.
  • Generate solute load estimates for flow monitored tributaries, Quabbin transfer, and smaller tributaries.
  • Continue to maintain EQ/Water Quality/ Hydro databases and make improvements as needed.
  • Continue to develop and maintain database‑backed tools and applications to facilitate data management, review and analysis, writing reports and modeling efforts.
  • Continue to work with UMASS and MWRA to use results of water quality models and analyses to inform and advise management decisions.
  • Develop measurable hydrologic and water quality relationships between two stations of the long‑term forestry project.
  • Ensure completion of sampling at long‑term forestry sites and other water quality investigations as needed.
  • Continue to supervise staff, develop work plans, document weekly activities, attend coordination meetings, and write any necessary summaries and reports.
  • Coordinate with Quabbin EQ Staff to align SOPs/QAPP for water quality and hydrologic monitoring and analyses.
  • Assist with maintenance and updates to hydrologic GIS layers and perform analyses using these layers, and create a geometric network in ArcGIS to route stormwater flows through the drainage network.
  • Take the lead on managing the USGS contract and obtain accurate data from continuous monitoring stations in all four watersheds.
  • Assist with bird harassment program and other projects as needed.

This is a hybrid position but the selected candidate is expected to be in the office three (3) days a week.

Minimum Entrance Requirements

Applicants must have at least (A) five years of full‑time, or equivalent part‑time, technical or professional experience in the field of environmental science, biology, chemistry, earth science, environmental health, meteorology, natural science, toxicology or public health; (B) at least three years of that experience must have been in a professional capacity; (C) at least one year must have been in a supervisory, managerial or administrative capacity;

or (D) any equivalent combination of the required experience and the following substitutions.
