Exemption Status:

Schedule Details: 40 Hours per week.

Hiring Range

$20.86 - $37.54. Final offer may vary within this range based on experience, skills, qualifications, and internal equity considerations. This position may also include a signing bonus; eligibility will be confirmed during the interview process.

Major Responsibilities
  • Perform a variety of duties involving safety, security, and related activities.
  • Patrol properties owned, leased, or occupied by UMass Memorial Health Care, ensuring the protection of persons and property and observing for criminal activity or any condition that may endanger life, health, or safety.
  • Create and maintain a sense of safety and security on all UMass Memorial Healthcare properties, enhancing the public interest of law enforcement and the Medical Center by demonstrating courteous and ethical service.
  • Conduct investigations as directed; submit professional and accurate reports; make lawful arrests in accordance with MA General Law Chap. 22c Sec. 63; provide testimony to court as necessary.
  • Ensure that all prisoners in care and custody are safely transported and processed in accordance with departmental policies and procedures.
  • Secure and properly record all evidence or other property entering custody.
  • Perform traffic‑directing duties as necessary; control traffic flow at various entrances and exits to parking lots; keep driveways and emergency entrances clear; assist with traffic during snow‑removal operations; keep emergency vehicle lanes clear at all times.
  • Report punctually to assignments and respond immediately to all emergencies.
  • Greet patients, visitors, and others in a courteous manner and assist those seeking directions.
  • Report questionable conditions, incidents, and discrepancies to supervisor or others; maintain radio communication at all times.
  • Standard Staffing Level Responsibilities
  • Comply with established departmental policies, procedures, and objectives.
  • Attend meetings, conferences, seminars as required or directed.
  • Demonstrate use of quality improvement in daily operations.
  • Comply with all health and safety regulations and requirements.
  • Respect diverse views and approaches, demonstrate standards of respect, and contribute to maintaining an environment of professionalism, tolerance, civility, and acceptance toward all employees, patients, and visitors.
  • Maintain regular, reliable, and predictable attendance.
  • Perform other similar and related duties as required or directed.
  • Position Qualifications License/Certification/Education (Required)
  • Equivalent to a high school education plus additional specialized courses.
  • Entry‑level candidates must attend a full‑time police academy authorized by the Massachusetts Municipal Police Training Committee.
  • Both academy‑trained and entry‑level officers must obtain certification as a law‑enforcement officer by the Massachusetts POST and the Massachusetts State Police (SSPO).
  • First‑responder, driver’s license, OCAT, and in‑service classes required.
  • Class A license to carry firearms in Massachusetts required.
  • CPR/First Aid certification within 30 days of hire/transfer into this job.
  • Successfully complete annual firearms training.
  • Experience/Skills (Required)
  • Good communication skills and ability to deal with the general public.
  • Ability to work under sometimes‑stressful conditions and maintain a calm composure.
  • Experience/Skills (Preferred)
  • Three (3) years of prior law‑enforcement experience.
  • POST certified, academy‑trained officers.
  • Physical Demands and Environmental Conditions

    Ability to mobilize quickly and efficiently. The position requires walking and standing for long periods in all weather conditions and may expose the employee to bodily fluids and environmental hazards.
