Summary
Transportation Security Officers (TSOs) provide security and protection of travelers across all transportation sectors in a courteous and professional manner. Their duties may also include securing high‑profile events and protecting important figures.
Salary InformationHyannis, MA (HYA – Barnstable Municipal Airport) salary range: $46,137 to $64,381 (or $22.11 to $30.85 per hour), including a locality pay of 32.58%.
Duties & Responsibilities- Operate various screening equipment to identify dangerous objects in baggage, cargo and on passengers.
- Perform searches and screening, including physical interaction with passengers, bag searches and lifting/carrying up to 50 lbs.
- Control terminal entry and exit points.
- Interact with the public, giving directions and responding to inquiries.
- Maintain focus and awareness in a stressful environment and make effective decisions in crisis and routine situations.
- Engage in continuous development of critical thinking skills to mitigate actual and potential security threats.
- Retain and implement knowledge of all applicable Standard Operating Procedures.
- Maintain flexiblity to squat and bend.
- Repeatedly lift and manipulate baggage and other objects weighing up to 50 lbs.
- Walk up to 3 miles during a shift and stand up to 4 hours.
- U.S. citizenship or U.S. National.
- Minimum age 18 at time of application.
- Selective Service registration required.
- Successfully complete structured interview, drug screening, medical evaluation, and background investigation.
- Subject to post‑employment random drug and/or alcohol testing.
- Availability to work various shifts, overtime, and travel for training.
- Proficiency in English (reading, writing, speaking).
- Exposure to potentially lethal devices and dangerous chemicals is inherent in the position.
- Experience: At least one year of full‑time experience in security, aviation screening, or as an X‑ray technician.
- Education: High school diploma, GED, HiSET, or TASC certificate.
- Occasional travel: minimum of 3 weeks of travel and up to 6 weeks during New Hire training.
- Selective Service verification for male applicants born after 12/31/59.
- Credit check: no delinquent federal or state taxes or past‑due child support.
- Residency requirement: reside in the U.S. for at least 3 of the last 5 years.
- TSO dress and appearance: comply with current Collective Bargaining Agreement; restrictions on visible piercings and tattoos.
- Work schedules:
Full‑time requires 40 hours per week with shift work; part‑time ranges 16–32 hours per week. - Maintaining employment: complete required training and recertification, pass background, credit, and drug tests.
