Job Description

POSITION: SCHOOL BUS MECHANIC

REPORTS TO:

ASSISTANT DIRECTOR OF TRANSPORTATION

ACCOUNTABILITY OBJECTIVE:
This position will report directly to the Fleet Service Manager. The School Bus Mechanic will perform all related maintenance duties, including but not limited to inspecting, diagnosing, repairing and servicing mechanical issues on Worcester Public Schools operated school buses and equipment and other district vehicles.

Supervise and maintain Worcester Public Schools school buses and other district vehicles at or above safety standards as established by the Registry of Motor Vehicles for school buses. Work will be performed in compliance with established safety procedures and meeting or exceeding industry-estimated times as established by the manufacturer.

Principal Accountabilities
  • Diagnoses malfunctions and performs vehicle repairs (e.g. adjust/test steering, electrical, cooling, lubricating, braking systems, drive trains, suspensions, power steering units, clutches, transmissions and oil, temperature, gas regulating components, etc.) and related assigned duties within qualification level, in accordance with all relevant Federal, State and local guidelines and requirements
  • Follows prescribed preventative maintenance procedures on all vehicles
  • Operates gas and arc welding equipment to repair cracks in body components and frames
  • Performs body and fender work, including spray‑painting exterior and interior finishes
  • Responds to school bus driver needs and maintains a positive working relationship with Transportation Department employees
  • Promotes high standards of safety. Maintains a safe, clean, productive and efficient work area including ensuring work area is in compliance with all relevant Federal, State and local guidelines and requirements
  • Identifies and reports any additional maintenance and/or repairs found necessary in conducting assigned repairs and maintenance including repairs and maintenance required to be performed by technicians with a higher qualification level
  • Records time spent, parts used and repairs and/or maintenance conducted on appropriate forms and software programs
  • Must be able to troubleshoot complex issues on cameras, Global Positioning Systems (GPS), and two‑way radios related to hardware wiring, and other plug‑and‑play troubleshooting
  • Ensures that all Worcester Public Schools school buses are properly prepared for the periodic Registry of Motor Vehicles school bus safety inspections
  • Performs road calls and on‑the‑road repairs as necessary
  • Parking lot and garage maintenance/snow removal
  • Performs other job duties as assigned
Mandatory Requirements
  • Minimum of five years Medium/Heavy fleet mechanic repair experience
  • Technical knowledge of major vehicle systems and diesel/gasoline equipment
  • Knowledge of automotive trade practices, tools, and equipment
  • Knowledge of construction and operation of automotive electrical systems and internal combustion engines
  • Knowledge of safety hazards and necessary precautions required to work around, in and under vehicles or to work with petroleum‑based chemicals, solvents and exhaust fumes
  • Ability to locate and repair defects in automotive vehicles and equipment
  • Ability to use tools and operate diagnostic and power equipment employed in the repair and adjustment of engines and components
  • Ability to perform diagnostic and mechanical repair work without direct supervision in the shop or in the field
  • Ability to use welding and other shop equipment such as lathes and grinders
  • Ability to change and repair tires
  • Ability to work independently within a prescribed budget
  • Must pass DOT pre‑employment physical, drug screen and fingerprint background check
  • Valid applicable state license (Class A or B CDL with no airbrake restriction)

  • Ase Certification

Workday and Year: 52 weeks / 8 hours per day with flexibility for overtime hours. Non‑represented. This is a twelve‑month position.
