The City of Worcester is seeking qualified candidates for Recreational Program Directors for the Department of Parks, Recreation, and Cemetery.
Under the direction of the Parks & Recreation Coordinator, the position is responsible for supervising seasonal staff and volunteers, overseeing spray park operations, and managing park permits. The position will liaise between the Parks Department and non‑profit or other organizations hosting summer programs, overseeing YMCA operations, Friends Groups, and Department special events. This position will observe youth behavior, program staff, and enforce appropriate safety regulations and emergency procedures within the policies and guidelines of the City of Worcester.
This is a seasonal position, with an approximate end date of September 11, 2026. Bilingual applicants are encouraged to apply.
SKILLS AND ABILITIES
- Experience with planning recreation programs
- Excellent organizational and administrative skills
- Computer proficiency including Microsoft Office Suite
- Leadership skills including knowledge of supervising staff
- Ability to perform manual labor and work in a variety of weather conditions
- Ability to work independently and in a group setting
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and the public
- Knowledge of emergency procedures, First Aid and CPR/AED
- Effective decision‑making and negotiation skills
- Ability to work up to forty (40) hours per week
- Ability to perform daily routine maintenance and safety checks of recreation equipment
- Ability to maintain clean program facilities and emptying trash barrels
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds
- Ability to pass CORI/SORI background checks
- Currently enrolled in a college/university, OR; high school diploma or equivalent, AND; any equivalent combination of education and two (2) years of supervisory experience directing recreation programs, inter‑mural sports activities
- Or Therapeutic Recreation Which Provides The Required Knowledge, Skills, and abilities to perform the essential functions of the position may be considered in lieu of above requirement.
- Experience in planning recreation programs for youth between 6 to 16 years of age
- Valid Driver's License
- Must be at least 18 years of age
- Must be able to pass CORI/SORI background checks
- First Aid and/or CPR/AED Certification
- Two (2) years in a supervisory capacity that demonstrates efficiency in directing recreation programs, inter‑mural sport activities or seasonal programs
- Basic administrative abilities including report writing and/or monitoring program budgets
