Job Overview

Full‑time Crew Leader/Heavy Equipment Operator position available at Town of Sudbury Transfer Station. Starting salary $27.75/hr. plus an annual stipend of $4,095 and excellent benefits.

Possession of Class B Massachusetts Operator’s License and a Hoisting Engineers Operators License required.

Responsibilities
  • Under direction of the Foreperson, performs supervisory and construction, maintenance, and repair work on an assigned public works project.
  • Has immediate responsibility for the work performance of an assigned crew of laborers and/or equipment operators engaged in routine construction or maintenance tasks.
  • Exercises judgment regarding work methods and procedures while maintaining routine operations.
  • Supervises a team of 1 to 4 public works employees.
  • Communicates with the general public as needed.
  • Performs physical tasks under varied weather conditions.
  • Instructs, assigns, and oversees staff of one to four equipment operators and laborers, training subordinates on safe and efficient use of tools, materials, and equipment.
  • Repairs roads, streets, fences, signs, sows grass, plants trees, cuts and rakes grass, prepares cemetery lots, builds and maintains storm drains, manholes, catch basins, and other town infrastructure such as highways, sidewalks, bridges, waterways, and park/cemetery areas.
  • Operates DPW Department vehicles and equipment (construction, maintenance, snow removal, etc.) as directed.
  • Performs preventive maintenance on equipment and vehicles, checks oil, water, battery, tire pressure, and reports problems to the Foreperson.
  • Effectively deals with subordinates and the public.
  • Communicates with the Foreperson to ensure correct manpower utilization, scheduling, surveys, plans, and proper equipment.
  • Processes daily work orders from the Foreperson and follows up on assignments.
  • Makes routine job‑site decisions regarding equipment operators, reporting them to the Foreperson.
  • On‑call 24 hours a day for snow removal.
  • May serve as Acting Foreperson when the Foreperson is absent.
  • Performs additional duties as assigned.
Experience
  • High school diploma or equivalent training and experience.
  • Three to five years of related experience in Public Works.
Qualifications
  • Ability to interact cooperatively and positively with a diverse group of employees, managers, and citizens.
  • Ability to communicate instructions clearly and concisely; organized and flexible with multiple projects.
  • Complete knowledge of methods, procedures, techniques, tools, materials, machines and equipment required to perform duties safely and effectively.
  • Knowledge of the physical characteristics of the Town and its road/system/cemetery record‑keeping/turf management.
  • Must meet physical requirements and complete periodic physical examinations.
  • Massachusetts Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) required.
  • Massachusetts Hydraulic License required.
