Description:

The Radiologic Technologist/Mammographer must demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served. The individual must be knowledgeable about the principles of growth and development over the life span. They should possess the ability to assess data reflective of the patient's status and interpret the information needed to identify each patient's needs. The job includes providing care as described in departmental policies and procedures.

The primary responsibilities include performing radiographic and sonographic examinations of all body parts for diagnostic interpretation. The technologist must exercise professional judgment when performing procedures while applying principles of radiation protection. They will maintain patient records and files and assume responsibility for departmental quality assurance programs. Continued education is expected. The technologist will also transfer patients to and from the radiology department.

In the absence of a supervisor, they will assume responsibility for the department. They must be able to rotate shifts as required and perform ancillary duties as requested by the supervisor. Following established policies and procedures is essential. The technologist should assist in maintaining the general hygiene of the department. They must be capable of working well in stressful situations.

Willingness to take call and report to work within a specified time frame is necessary. The technologist should also be willing to learn other imaging modalities as needed. Active participation in mammography tasks, such as breast needle localization, specimen radiography, and quality control, is expected. Maintaining required continuing education credits in mammography is essential. In the CT and interventional areas, responsibility for equipment care and record maintenance is required.

Assisting with invasive procedures and consulting with referring physicians is part of the role. Knowledge of standard precautions and the ability to alter protocols for different patient age groups is necessary. The technologist should maintain competency in tele-radiology transmission and sterile technique. Inventory management and assisting with supply ordering are also responsibilities. Attending departmental and organizational meetings, in-services, and disaster drills is expected.

This position requires compliance with ethical and regulatory standards. The technologist must work effectively with patients and employees of diverse cultural and religious backgrounds. They are obligated to report any compliance variances to their immediate supervisor or appropriate channels.
