Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA)

The role provides basic nursing care to non-acute and acutely ill residents while maintaining a safe and clean environment. Candidates must demonstrate the ability to react calmly and make sound judgments within the scope of duties when caring for ill patients and during emergencies. Regularly lifting non-ambulatory patients/residents is a requirement. A caring attitude is essential when dealing with both acute and non-acute patients/residents and their families.

The job pace is rapid, with constant pressure to complete nursing assignments and respond to patient call lights. Accountability for all actions taken is expected. Delegation from a supervising licensed nurse is accepted. Responsibilities include obtaining nursing data through observation and interviewing residents under a licensed nurse's direction. Documenting observation findings consistent with other providers under a licensed nurse's supervision is necessary.

Providing general nursing care for adult and geriatric populations is required, including tasks such as bed baths, oral hygiene, dressing patients, and applying heat and cold appliances. Monitoring and recording vital signs and other health metrics is part of the responsibilities. Collecting and transporting specimens to appropriate departments is expected. Ability to distinguish between normal and abnormal findings is required.

Any changes in the condition or behavior of patients/residents must be reported to the licensed nurse. Providing bedside care includes positioning residents, assisting with restroom needs, and answering call lights. Assisting licensed nurses with transporting residents and preparing for transfers is required. Providing one-on-one care for residents when indicated for safety is part of the role. Maintaining a safe and clean environment involves preparing nursing areas and cleaning equipment.

Managing clean and dirty linen and ensuring adequate stock levels of supplies is necessary. Disposing of waste according to organizational policies is a requirement. For Critical Access Client specialty, obtaining 12-lead Electrocardiograms (ECGs) is included. Training in telemetry monitoring of patients within the inpatient unit is required. Becoming a Point of Care Trainer within three months of obtaining CNA II is expected.

Cross-training to additional areas of the facility for staffing flexibility is part of the role. Participating in performance or process improvement projects within the unit is encouraged. Serving as a preceptor for incoming CNA staff and students is included in the responsibilities.
