Direct Care Worker (2600018L) – DDS Summer Urban Youth, Wrentham Developmental Center
OverviewThe Department of Developmental Services (DDS) sponsors the "Urban Youth Collaborative" program, giving students ages 18‑24 the opportunity to support individuals with intellectual disabilities at the Wrentham Developmental Center, an intermediate‑care facility offering residential and day services. The goal is to expose young adults to human‑services careers such as lawyers, accountants, unit directors, nurses, therapists, and more.
Program DetailsThe program runs from mid‑May to Labor Day Weekend, a maximum 90‑day appointment. Participants must be available for the entire summer with no vacations, and must possess a valid driver’s license.
Duties and Responsibilities- Provide personal care support and assist individuals in their community involvement.
- Support and encourage interaction and integration into the community.
- Accompany individuals on frequent community outings such as concerts, Patriots training camp, aquariums, restaurants, libraries, and coffee shops.
- Plan, set up, and lead a variety of activities at the individuals’ residences, including music and movement, arts & crafts, cooking and baking, and social events such as coffee and ice cream get‑togethers.
- Ability to develop and maintain a respectful, caring, tolerant, ethical, and empowering relationship with individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
- Ability to assist and facilitate activities of daily living such as household maintenance, self‑care and hygiene, food shopping and preparation, budgeting, leisure activities, and social‑skill development.
- Capability to assist/lift individuals with physical disabilities and/or limited mobility.
- Applicant must be between 18‑24 years old.
- Have a valid driver’s license.
- Must have a reliable form of transportation.
Positions are on either the first or second shift with specified days off. Pay is $22.98 per hour. State employees are paid bi‑weekly through direct deposit.
Pre‑Offer ProcessA criminal history check will be completed on the recommended candidate as required by the Executive Office of Health and Human Services. Selected candidates must successfully complete pre‑employment screening, including a DPPC abuse registry search, a CORI criminal background check, and a national fingerprint‑based background check.
