Internship Description

Providing a generalist social work overview with a focus on nonprofit work. Working closely with families in underserved communities to provide high quality services in basic needs areas. The student will gain professional skills in case management, advocacy, and community engagement while learning how to work effectively with a team.

Interns Essential Functions
  • Assisting clients with applying for basic needs programs internally and externally
  • Working with families or individuals in an underserved community
  • Assisting walk‑in clients with their needs
  • Conducting outbound phone calls to clients needing assistance to ensure they get connected to services
  • Applying trauma‑informed care by meeting clients where they are
  • Applying classroom learning to real‑world social work practices
Qualified Candidates
  • Actively obtaining a Bachelor’s degree in Social Work
  • Passionate about local community work and advocacy efforts
  • Ability to develop and maintain effective processes by employing critical thinking to relate tasks as a way to maximize efficiency through to completion
Physical Requirements

This is a largely sedentary role performed in a professional office environment. The employee must occasionally lift or move up to 25 pounds and regularly sit, use hands, talk, or hear.

Minimum Qualifications
  • High school diploma, general education degree (GED), or equivalent education/experience
  • Pass criminal background check and drug screening
Minimum Competencies
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in written form
  • Above average attention to detail
  • Good interpersonal and professional skills including professional appearance, tact, punctuality, and dependability
  • Perform work in a manner that upholds Wayne Metro policies, procedures, and mission
