LIBRARY AIDE
ETNA ELEMENTARY
DEFINITION
Under the direction of the principal and district librarian(s), to plan, organize and maintain the building library collection; to assist in the research and acquisition of books, publications, documents, media and other instructional materials; to assist the instructional staff and students in pursuing special curriculum and pilot projects; to plan, develop, organize and assist in the operation of a comprehensive master planning process;
and to do other related functions as required.
DUTIES
- Assist and guide students and the instructional personnel toward improved proficiency in library science technology
- Instruct pupils in research skills, and in the use of library media and equipment to supplement and reinforce classroom instruction
- Utilize a variety of creative and innovative methodology to provide assistance to other instructional personnel
- Provide demonstration teaching in specialized instructional areas using modern and updated educational equipment, materials, books and learning aids
- Participate with school administrators, teachers, other staff and parents in the selecting, maintaining, storing, and acquiring of library collection additions, equipment and print and non-print instructional materials
- Plan, organize and coordinate the technical library operational processes, including the acquisition, organization, maintenance, retrieval, and inventory control
- Assist instructional personnel in the establishment of standards of student behavior in a library setting
- Plan, organize, and maintain an automated informational management, storage, and retrieval system, and prepare periodic operational reports
- Direct students into safe learning activities and functions and assist in the shaping of appropriate social behaviors
- Assist in the management of student behavior through the use of positive strategies and techniques
- Maintain confidentiality associated with student records and information
- Operate and assist students in the operation of a variety of technology
- Administer routine first aid and request assistance for non-routine injury or illness
- Assist in maintaining an orderly, attractive, and positive learning environment
- May participate in parent conferences and other student progress report activities
- Other duties as assigned
Must have either a high school diploma or a GED. Must be eligible for or hold highly-qualified status by having either a minimum of 48 college credits or successful completion of the Para Pro.
Knowledge of:
- Basic concepts of child growth and development, and developmental behavior characteristics
- Student behavior management strategies and techniques
- Appropriate English usage, punctuation, spelling, and grammar
- Basic arithmetical concepts including budgeting
- Routine record management, storage, and retrieval
Ability to:
- Demonstrate an understanding, patient, and receptive attitude toward students of varied age groups
- Communicate effectively in oral and written form in English
- Perform routine clerical tasks and operate a variety of educational and office related machines and equipment
- Learn to utilize a variety of appropriate instructional materials and procedures in the enhancement of a positive educational environment
- Understand and carry out oral and written directions
- Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with children and adults
- Plan, organize, develop and assist in the conduct of a comprehensive library service program, and educational planning process
- Perform research and development activities pertaining to modern library science and curriculum and instruction programs

- Persons performing service in this position classification will exert 10 to 20 pounds of force frequently to lift, carry push, pull, or otherwise move objects
- This type of work involves sitting most of the time, but may involve running, walking or standing for brief periods
- Perceiving the nature of sound, near and far visual acuity, depth perception, providing oral information, the manual dexterity to operate business related equipment, and handle and work with various materials and objects are important aspects of this job
