SUMMARY: The ELA and History Teacher provides standards-aligned, credit-bearing instruction in core humanities subjects for RTM students within a therapeutic school environment. This role develops students' literacy skills, analytical thinking, written and verbal communication, and historical/civic understanding through structured coursework and clear instructional routines.

The teacher designs and implements lessons responsive to students' academic levels and emotional needs while maintaining consistent expectations and predictable classroom systems. Using formative and summative assessment data, the teacher monitors progress and adjusts instruction to support growth.

In collaboration with the education and clinical teams, the teacher supports student engagement, regulation, and academic progress. This role also serves as a student advisor, contributes to Individual Learning Plans, and provides targeted 1:1 support or additional electives as needed.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
1. Instructional Responsibilities
  • Deliver structured, credit-bearing instruction in:
    • Language Arts
    • American Studies
    • World Studies / Geography
  • Teach and/or contribute to:
    • Physical Education (including Health & Hygiene standards)
    • Educational Games & Initiatives; other electives & programming as deemed necessary
  • Support students in developing:
    • Foundational literacy skills
    • Analytical reading and writing
    • Historical and civic understanding
    • Academic confidence, executive functioning skills, and independent work habits
  • Differentiate instruction to meet varied academic levels while preserving course integrity.
  • Adapt pacing and instructional methods to support diverse learners.
  • Develop and maintain curriculum maps and unit plans aligned to Wyoming State Academic Content Standards. Utilize Backwards Design (as adapted by RTM) including:
    • Clear standards alignment
    • Measurable objectives
    • Defined assessments
  • Review and revise course descriptions annually in collaboration with the Education Director.
  • Incorporate project-based learning, guest speakers, field experiences, and community partnerships where appropriate.
2. Student Support & Therapeutic Alignment
  • Maintain awareness of students' therapeutic goals, accommodations, and relevant background information.
  • Attend and contribute to regular faculty meetings and case review meetings.
  • Collaborate closely with therapists, childcare staff, and administration to support student progress.
  • Provide behavioral and academic observations as requested.
  • Maintain a regulated, consistent classroom presence aligned with RTM therapeutic practices.
3. Special Education & Differentiation
  • Actively participate in the IEP process.
    • Attend IEP meetings as needed and contribute instructional data and recommendations.
    • Monitor and document progress toward IEP goals.
  • Collaborate with special education staff to adjust instruction as needed; provide necessary services & accommodations to IEP students
  • Provide clear instructional direction to classroom aides regarding student accommodations.
  • Identify students not responding to instruction and collaborate to implement targeted supports.
  • Provide reintegration recommendations to the Academic & Transition Coordinator when transitioning students back to district schools.
4. Collaboration & Communication
  • Maintain ongoing communication with:
    • Therapists (who serve as primary family communication conduit)
    • Youth Care
    • RTM Program Director
    • Teaching team;
      Academic & Transition Coordinator
    • Education Director
  • Provide clear direction and instructional guidance to classroom aides.
  • Debrief regularly with aides to strengthen instructional consistency.
  • Participate in the Education Task Force.
  • Contribute to interdisciplinary curriculum development.
