GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

The Wyoming Department of Transportation (WYDOT) is dedicated to delivering a safe, high-quality, and efficient transportation system for the State of Wyoming and is currently seeking a full-time Engineer II based in Sundance, Wyoming. This position involves supporting highway projects from initial planning through design, construction, and final contract completion under the guidance of the Resident Engineer. Responsibilities include a range of engineering tasks essential to the successful execution of transportation infrastructure projects.

Located in the scenic community of Sundance-famous as the place where "the Kid" got his name-the area offers access to the Black Hills and Bear Lodge Mountains, providing abundant outdoor recreation opportunities such as hunting, fishing, hiking, camping, skiing, snowmobiling, golf, and rodeos. Sundance maintains a quiet, small-town atmosphere while experiencing a seasonal influx of visitors traveling to Devils Tower and the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

* Issues, reviews, comments, and revised plan sets.

* Reviews and approves or rejects project submittals/permits.

* Reviews and updates forms and documentation procedures regarding construction activities and pay quantities.

* Inspects and assures projects/facilities are completed according to plans, specifications, design criteria, and budgetary constraints.

* Compiles and submits engineering recommendations and summaries for the design of various projects/facilities with varying levels of complexity.

* Conducts extensive research on existing and evolving technologies.

* Provides technical guidance, advice, and oversight.

* Works in direct contact with contractors and subcontractors daily to manage projects under construction.

* Deals with landowners, traveling public and local, county, state, and federal government entities in the same context.

* Performs field inspections, laboratory testing, materials analysis, and quality control.

* Develops engineering models, conducts studies, makes cost estimates, and submits reports, summaries, and other required documentation.

* Reviews and evaluates the work of assigned engineering technicians.

* Performs inspections and testing to ensure the contractor is constructing the project according to plans, specifications, etc.

* Provides the contractor with the necessary information to construct a project (showing a project and interpreting plans).

* Calculates and documents quantities for payment to the contractor.

* Examines and verifies numeric data and specifications on source documents by recalculating computations using geometry or trigonometry.

* Resolves geometric and trigonometric problems encountered during the process of making detailed engineering drawings.

* Review construction plans and verify that these are in accordance with designated specifications and other requirements.

* Conducts field engineering surveys, including reading a level, operating a total station, GPS, and making decisions to solve problems.

* Checks and verifies the accuracy of detailed drawings in projects and makes corrections in drawings if necessary.

* Designs preliminary work, calculating land areas, earth forms, circular curves, material quantities, and other qualitative measurements using geometric and trigonometric computations.

* Trains other personnel in engineering and surveying and training personnel on proper fieldwork documentation techniques.

* Coordinates with the contractor other agencies, and the public when a project impacts them

* Oversees moderate to major construction projects by documenting pay quantities, directing the work schedule of subordinates, and working with a contractor for quality control

* Ensures that materials sampling and testing are performed properly; audits material summaries for QA/QC purposes.
