Highway Maintenance Technician & Snowplow Operator

General Description

The Wyoming Department of Transportation (WYDOT) is seeking a motivated and reliable Highway Maintenance Technician to join our team in Saratoga, Wyoming. This position performs a variety of highway and infrastructure maintenance duties under limited supervision to ensure a safe, high-quality, and efficient transportation system for the traveling public. Responsibilities include operating and maintaining heavy equipment, performing roadway repairs, supporting snow and ice control operations, assisting with traffic control, and conducting routine inspections of roadways and right‑of‑way areas.

• Maintain and operate complex equipment safely and proficiently.
• Assist in training other technicians in equipment operation and maintenance.
• Flag traffic and set up traffic control devices under limited supervision.
• Operate heavy equipment such as single and tandem‑axle trucks, augment, aerial lift equipment, plows, wing plows, sanders, and chemical systems to remove snow and ice from roadways.
• Rehabilitate roadway surfaces and traffic control devices such as signs and pavement markings.
• Perform general maintenance of highway‑related facilities such as rest areas, including water and wastewater treatment per EPA and DEQ requirements.
• Attend and complete all state and federal training required to obtain/maintain certifications, conduct inspections, and learn new skills.
• Communicate information to update others' status and process effectiveness.
• Utilize computers for agency practices, including training and performance evaluations, and keep up to date on technological advances with specialized equipment.
• Remove snow and ice from roadways; determine the effectiveness of treatments and adjust as necessary.
• Adhere to all state and federal safety and quality standards, including correct use of personal protective equipment.

• Must have the ability to obtain a Class A Commercial Driver's License within 12 months of hire.
• Must have the ability to obtain certification to operate specified equipment as directed by WYDOT.
• Must have the ability to obtain a Certificate of course completion in Defensive Driving.
• Must have the ability to obtain First Aid/CPR certification.
• Must have the ability to obtain Flagger certification.

• 2–4 years of relevant work experience in Highway Maintenance or Highway Construction, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

• Associate’s Degree in Engineering or related field, or 0–1 year of relevant experience with the required license.

• Frequent use of manual and powered hand tools.
• Daily use of motor vehicles and heavy equipment.
• Frequent exposure to hazardous materials.
• Ability to lift and carry 50 pounds independently.
• Ability to stand/sit and operate equipment for long periods.
• Work in adverse environmental conditions, including rain, snow, heat, and hail.
• Ability to walk long periods on even and uneven ground.
• Working around high‑speed traffic and heavy construction equipment.
