The Wyoming Department of Transportation (WYDOT) is seeking a motivated and reliable Highway Maintenance Technician to join our team in Arlington, Wyoming. This position performs a variety of highway and infrastructure maintenance duties under limited supervision to ensure a safe, high-quality, and efficient transportation system for the traveling public. Responsibilities include operating and maintaining heavy equipment, performing roadway repairs, supporting snow and ice control operations, assisting with traffic control, and conducting routine inspections of roadways and right‑of‑way areas.

Essential Functions
  • Maintains and operates complex equipment safely and proficiently.
  • Assists with training other technicians in the operation and maintenance of equipment.
  • Under limited supervision, flags traffic and sets up traffic control devices.
  • Operates heavy equipment, including single and tandem axle trucks, with augers, aerial lifts, plows, wing plows, sanders, and chemical systems for snow and ice control.
  • Rehabilitates roadway surfaces and traffic control devices such as signs and pavement markings.
  • General maintenance of highway‑related facilities such as rest areas, including performing water and wastewater treatment per EPA and DEQ requirements.
  • Attends and completes all state and federal training to obtain and maintain certifications, perform inspections, and learn new skills.
  • Communicates information to update others’ status and/or process effectiveness.
  • Uses computers for agency practices, such as training and performance evaluations, and keeps up to date on technological advances with specialized equipment.
  • Performs duties involved in removing snow and ice from roadways; determines the effectiveness of treatments and may adjust treatments as necessary.
  • Adheres to all state and federal safety and quality standards, including correct use of all personal protective equipment.
Preferences
  • Ability to obtain a Class A Commercial Driver’s License.
  • Ability to obtain a certification to operate specified equipment as directed by WYDOT.
  • Ability to obtain a Certificate of course completion in Defensive Driving.
  • Ability to obtain a First Aid/CPR certification.
  • Ability to obtain a Flagger certification.
Knowledge / Agency Requirements
  • State highway pavement marking and signing standards.
  • State and federal highway safety standards and traffic control procedures.
  • Equipment maintenance and repair procedures.
  • Hazardous materials response procedures.
  • Federal and state requirements for proper use of personal protective equipment.
  • Basic operation of single and tandem‑axle trucks, loaders, and tractors.
  • Safe work procedures, First Aid, CPR, and OSHA Safety Data Sheets for chemicals used in maintenance activities.
  • Basic office equipment such as computers, calculators, and telephones.
Minimum Qualifications

Education & Experience (substitution)

  • 2–4 years of relevant work experience (typically in highway maintenance/highway construction).

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations

  • Must obtain a Class A Commercial Driver’s License within twelve (12) months of hire.
