Overview
The Wyoming Department of Transportation (WYDOT) seeks a full‑time Engineer I to oversee projects from design through construction in Sundance, Wyoming.
As an Engineer in Construction, you will assist the Resident Engineer with project initiation, quality control, cost estimation, and contract completion.
Responsibilities- Perform field inspections, surveys, laboratory testing, material analysis, and quality control.
- Develop engineering models, conduct studies, prepare cost estimates, and submit reports and documentation.
- Review and evaluate the work of assigned engineering technicians.
- Inspect and test construction to ensure compliance with plans and specifications.
- Provide necessary information to contractors (e.g., interpreting plans).
- Calculate and document quantities for payment to contractors.
- Verify numeric data and specifications by recalculating computations using geometry or trigonometry.
- Resolve geometric and trigonometric problems during drawing preparation.
- Review construction plans for compliance with specifications and requirements.
- Conduct field engineering surveys using level, total station, GPS, and problem‑solving techniques.
- Verify accuracy of detailed drawings and make corrections as needed.
- Design preliminary work, calculate land areas, earthworks, curves, material quantities, and related measurements.
- Train personnel in engineering and surveying practices and documentation.
- Coordinate with contractors, agencies, and the public on project impacts.
Bachelor's Degree in Engineering.
Experience0–2 years of progressive engineering work experience.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities- Principles, theories, concepts, and practices of engineering.
- Use of computers, calculators, survey equipment, and testing devices.
- Contemporary road construction contract practices.
- Analysis of situations and development of solutions based on policy and specifications.
- Micro Station and Geopak proficiency.
- Proficiency with word processors, spreadsheets, and other computer programs.
- Interpretation of plans and specifications.
- Engineering calculation and accounting procedures.
- Interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills.
- Decision‑making and direction of work activities.
- High‑level engineering calculations and highway construction planning and design.
- Some agencies may require a certificate of registration from the Board of Engineering.
- Potential exposure to hazardous waste.
- Work around high‑speed traffic and heavy construction equipment.
- Outdoor work in varying weather conditions.
- Physical duties include bending, stooping, and lifting up to 50 pounds; standing for long periods.
- Salary per state classification schedule.
