GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

Wyoming State Park Rangers provide law enforcement services for visitors through the Ranger First philosophy, visitor safety, including search and rescue, and staff at state parks and historic sites. This includes enforcement of state statutes, park rules and regulations, motor vehicle crash investigations, park visitor assistance, training seasonal law enforcement staff, preparation of reports, testifying in court, property protection, and assisting other agencies.

Housing and basic utilities are included for a $100 per month fee.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

The listed functions are illustrative only and are not intended to describe every function that may be performed at the job level.

* Provide Law Enforcement Duties and Public Safety. Enforce state statutes and park rules and regulations as applicable within statutory and agency guidelines. Investigate motor vehicle crashes and reported crimes on Wyoming State Parks and Historic Sites. Patrol assigned park areas to provide high public visibility and provide periodic security checks on Federal Bureau of Reclamation dams and power plants.

* Public Information and Assistance. Assist visitors requiring aid for various reasons. Provide recreational and historic information about the park system and the local area. Implement and conduct Community Policing efforts at parks and historic sites. Prepare for and testify in court. Provide traffic control or other assistance for special events as requested by other agencies or officers.

* Administrative. Perform office duties to include daily activity reports, investigative reports, vehicle crash reports, required departmental reports, monthly scheduling, and correspondence.

* Training. Direct the field training of seasonal park rangers at their individual parks or sites. This enables the parks to produce qualified park rangers for seasonal/part-time staff.

* Assist other park staff as needed. Assist park maintenance staff with projects such as minor property maintenance, traffic counter readings, fee collection, and campsite reservation system operation.

* Budget Management. Routinely assess and review monthly budget information. Monitor spending trends/habits, monthly expenditures, balances, and calculate shortfalls and surpluses.

* Equipment and Vehicle Management. Maintain and clean all equipment and ranger vehicles. Provide light preventive maintenance to state-issued equipment and vehicles. Develop and maintain a complete inventory of all state-issued equipment assigned to the Park Ranger. Acquire, maintain, and dispose of all unserviceable equipment.

* Other Duties as Assigned. Attend various public meetings, conferences, and engagements where relevant division issues are being discussed. Professionally represent the department at these events. Work with other state, federal, county, and municipal agencies, as well as volunteers and constituent groups.

Qualifications

PREFERENCES:

Preference may be given to applicants with a Bachelor's Degree in Natural Resource Management, Criminal Justice, OR a related field, PLUS 2-3 years of progressive work experience in law enforcement. Must have POST (Peace Officer Standards and Training) certification.

KNOWLEDGE:

* Knowledge of the Ranger profession and the Ranger First philosophy

* Knowledge of Search and Rescue, Incident Command System, and Boating Safety

* Knowledge of Constitutional Law, State Law, Freedom of Information Act, Rules of Evidence, Laws of Arrest, Search and Seizure, Custody and Control,

* Skill in Emergency Vehicle Operations

* Knowledge of Search and Rescue

* Firearms proficiency

* Ability to swim proficiently

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education:

Bachelor's Degree (typically in Criminal Justice)

Experience:

0-2 years of progressive work experience (typically in Security)

3-5 years of progressive work experience (typically in Security)

PHYSICAL

WORKING CONDITIONS:

* Work is performed outdoors in all weather conditions.

* Work could be performed at night and on weekends, especially during the busy summer and shoulder seasons.

NOTES:

* FLSA:
Non-Exempt

* Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license.

* First Aid and CPR certifications are required within 1 year of hire.

* Typical patrols are conducted in 4x4 vehicles, mountain bikes, UTVs, boats, and on foot.

* Must be able to swim 50 yards

* Must be able to ride a mountain bike on tough terrain

* Must be able to hike over uneven, steep terrain for extended distances and durations
