Job Overview

Qualification Requirements
  • Prior on-the-line firefighting: Substantial wildland firefighting experience documented with dates, description of work performed, and hours per week. Experience must be in containment, control, suppression or use of wildland fire. Such experience may be gained through fire line work in temporary, seasonal, or equivalent private sector positions. Prescribed fire experience must be supplemented by fire suppression experience to be creditable.
GW-09 Grade Level Qualifications
  • Current or former federal employee (competitive or exempt appointment): One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GW-07 grade level.
  • Non-federal employee or no prior federal appointment: One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GW-08 grade level.

Examples of specialized experience include: assisting on plans for wildland fire mitigation; coordinating educational programs with other agencies, institutions, or communities; developing and implementing prevention campaigns for wildfire causes; acting as a wildland fire investigator; making recommendations on mitigation plans. Volunteer experience through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, Ameri Corps) or other organizations also counts toward credit.

Secondary Firefighter Retirement Coverage – This position requires knowledge of wildland firefighting principles and direct experience. A written description of wildland firefighting experience is required; education alone does not meet the requirement.

Physical Demands

Work is primarily sedentary but requires a level of physical fitness to work during periods of extended stress and in the field during wildland fire situations. Extended assignments may be required, and strenuous activities, endurance, and superior conditioning may be necessary during emergency situations.

Working Conditions

Work is generally performed in an office setting. Field work involves exposure to temperature extremes, falling trees, smoke, and dust. Protective clothing (boots, hard hats, etc.) is required. The incumbent must exercise a variety of safety practices and precautions for the well‑being of self and others.
