Sublette County Health proudly operates two urgent care clinics with Level 5 Trauma receiving Emergency Rooms, as well as two EMS stations. On August 4, 2025, we opened Sublette County’s first hospital – a historic milestone for our community.

As part of our growth, Heritage Home – our Skilled Nursing facility – is expanding to its new home with a 40‑bed Skilled Nursing Unit and a brand‑new 10‑bed Memory Care Unit, designed to provide compassionate, resident‑centered care.

Overview

The Certified Medical Coding Specialist translates clinical and/or ambulance work into code and enters billing codes into the practice management system for reimbursement. The role also performs chart compliance audits and provides coding and billing education to providers, clinical staff, and ambulance crews as needed.

Supervisor

Reports directly to the Hospital Revenue Cycle Director.

Responsibilities
  • Apply appropriate E&M, ICD‑10, CPT, HCPCS codes and modifiers from medical record documentation.
  • Resolve documentation deficiencies through provider query and education, providing routine feedback.
  • Perform quality assessment of records, verifying documentation in electronic and written formats, and collaborate with the QA team to improve quality.
  • Research errors and missing documentation to ensure accurate coding.
  • Assist with correcting and resubmitting denied insurance claims, identifying corrective actions to prevent recurrence.
  • Maintain up‑to‑date credentials and participate in coding and billing education opportunities.
  • Maintain communication with outside affiliations and identify practice‑management‑system errors.
  • Answer billing phone calls, assist guarantors or patients with questions, comments, or concerns.
  • Update patient demographic information as needed.
  • Cross‑train with other business office personnel and perform other business office functions as directed.
  • Attend district staff and team meetings, conduct special projects and studies as directed.
Qualifications
  • High school graduate (required).
  • Certified Coding Certificate (required).
  • College coursework (some college) helpful.
  • Ideally 2 years experience using a medical software system.
Knowledge,

Skills and Abilities
  • Knowledge of CPT, HCPCS and ICD coding parameters.
  • Knowledge of anatomy and physiology.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology.
  • Knowledge of current health‑care compliance regulations.
  • Skill in using computer programs and applications.
  • Typing speed of 30 wpm.
  • Ability to read for long periods.
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
  • Ability to prioritize and complete multiple tasks in a timely manner.
  • Ability to self‑direct with minimal supervision and communicate when help is needed.
Working Conditions

Subject to varying situations, requiring sensitivity to special population groups, frequent contact with a variety of people including prisoners and those with mental, emotional and physical disabilities, exposure to communicable diseases, and long office hours at a computer. May include travel between district sites.

Physical Demands and Schedule

Varied activities including moving, reaching, bending, lifting up to 50 lb, manual and finger dexterity, eye‑hand coordination. Requires standing and moving for extended periods, corrected vision and hearing to normal range, and ability to work under stressful conditions and irregular hours. Year‑round highway travel between clinics and other facilities is required.
