The Financial Counselor position is part of the Patient Financial Services Department and is afull-time role working
80hours per week, Monday – Friday, 8:00 AM – 4:30 PM. This role provides proactive and retrospective financial counseling to patients, helping them navigate medical bills, financial assistance, and payment plans while ensuring compliance with hospital policies and federal regulations.

Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent required

  • AAPC certification in medical billing/coding or ability to obtain within 12 months of hire

  • Understanding of insurance billing, including Medicare, Medicaid, and Commercial plans strongly preferred

  • Experience with medical terminology and coding is a plus

  • Strong computer, office, and math skills

  • Knowledge of medical billing processes, including Insurance Remittance Advice, Price Transparency Rules, and regulations

  • Ability to process monetary transactions accurately

  • Excellent written, verbal, and telephone communication skills

  • Professional demeanor with a focus on confidentiality and customer service

  • Epic experience preferred

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide financial counseling to patients regarding medical bills, payment plans, and financial assistance

  • Review patient documentation to determine eligibility for hospital financial assistance programs

  • Assist patients with completing Financial Assistance applications

  • Collect and post patient payments and establish payment plans

  • Ensure Good Faith Estimates are provided in compliance with state and federal guidelines

  • Maintain adherence to payer reimbursement policies and federal healthcare program requirements

  • Collaborate with providers, clinical staff, and Revenue Cycle team members to ensure smooth patient workflow

  • Communicate clearly and professionally while maintaining confidentiality

  • Perform other duties as assigned to support the department
