The position supervises a Regional Fishery Management team charged with providing and protecting diverse, quality fisheries resources and angling opportunities in balance with the productive capacity of habitats and public desires.

The team consists of two Regional Fisheries Biologists and multiple temporary biologist technicians and AIS watercraft inspectors.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: The listed functions are illustrative only and are not intended to describe every function which may be performed at the job level.

  • Responsibility for implementation of the Department's aquatic wildlife management and protection programs in the Upper Green and Lower Bear River drainages of Wyoming.
  • Develops and implements strategies to maintain or expand fish populations and fishing opportunities.
  • Utilizes fish stocking, regulations, public outreach, and habitat management to accomplish Department objectives based on sound science and public desires.
  • Oversees AIS program operations within the Pinedale Region in cooperation with the AIS Coordinator.
  • Directly supervises permanent and temporary employees in all aspects of jobs, including training, enforcement of Department policies and procedures, scheduling, data handling and analysis, equipment operation and maintenance, and preparation of reports and presentations.
  • Builds and maintains relationships with customers.
  • Serves as the primary regional contact for all aquatic wildlife issues in the region.
  • Answers questions related to most aspects of Department operation, including policy, regulation, and aquatic wildlife management.
  • Supervises the preparation and administration of annual and monthly work scheduling, preparation of annual progress reports, and the preparation and editing of administrative reports, publications, and presentations.
  • Communicates and coordinates with other Department employees as needed to effectively accomplish Department objectives, including fish staff, AIS coordinator, fish culture, aquatic habitat management, enforcement, regional leadership team, regional office management, fiscal, information technology, information and education, and services personnel.
  • Develops annual regional aquatic wildlife operational budget and has primary oversight of crew budget.
  • Collaborates with state and federal land and water management agencies, tribes, and private landowners on issues related to aquatic wildlife management.
  • Serves as regional representative or liaison for various interagency teams and working groups.
  • Provides written comments on activities that may negatively impact aquatic resources and suggests alternatives or mitigating actions.

Qualifications

PREFERENCES/AGENCY REQUIREMENTS: Preferences may be given to those with a Master's of Science degree, plus 5 years of field experience.

  • Must have a valid driver's license.

KNOWLEDGE:

  • Skill in oral and written communication with the public and other professionals.
  • Leadership skills for supervising and coordinating the work of independent professionals.
  • Skill in supervising, reviewing, and editing the work and recommendations of subordinate biologists and specialists, reviewing scientific literature, and making resource management decisions based on sound scientific data and interpretation.
  • Ability to lead complex studies of aquatic resources of the State and make decisions on reported results and recommendations.
  • Knowledge of AIS threats, prevention, and best practices.
  • Knowledge of major principles and concepts of fishery management, fishery science, fish taxonomy, public resource management, and natural resource protection.
  • Knowledge of State and Department policies, procedures, guidelines, and regulations.
