Adult Education ESL Instructor, Part Time​/Temporary

Title: Temporary Adult Education ESL Instructor

Reports To: Director of Adult Education (Immediate Supervisor)

Terms of Employment: Temporary Agreement ($35/hour). Mornings from 8:45 AM to 12:00 PM (Mon – Fri). Total 16.25 hours per week during the regular school year (August – June). 182‑day position subject to all rules and regulations covering classified personnel.

Salary: $35 per hour

• Instruct students on topics and materials needed to become proficient in the English language.
• Help students prepare and study for transitioning to GED instruction.
• Assess students’ readiness to take exams (prior experience with CASAS is preferred).
• Create lesson plans and modify them throughout the year.
• Maintain a grade book and attendance log timely and accurately (prior experience with Power School is preferred).
• Grade papers and perform other administrative duties as needed.
• Create projects designed to enhance lesson delivery and skills attainment.
• Read and stay abreast of current topics in adult education.
• Utilize curricula that reflect the diverse educational, cultural, and linguistic backgrounds of the students served.
• Develop incentives to keep students in class and regularly attending.
• Develop professional relationships with the students, colleagues, and other agencies or programs.
• Work with program administration to ensure program initiatives are being met.
• Establish and communicate clear objectives for all learning activities.
• Prepare and distribute required reports.
• Observe and evaluate student performance.

• Valid and current Michigan teaching certificate required; ESL endorsement preferred.
• Ability to effectively work with students, families, staff, and other stakeholders from diverse backgrounds.
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills to interact with students, staff, community partners, etc. in a courteous and cooperative manner. Bilingual abilities preferred.
• Ability to concentrate, organize, prioritize, and work independently and cooperatively; schedules and meets deadlines.
• Ability to read, comprehend, and transmit complicated and detailed instructions to plan and perform job duties.
• Broad knowledge of organizational operations and policy.
• High level of interpersonal skills such as discretion, integrity and flexibility to interact effectively with students, staff, administrators, community partners, and the general public.
• Excellent computer skills. Must work efficiently and effectively within Microsoft Office Suite, Power School, Google products, and learn web‑based applications related to the Adult Education program and Kent ISD.
• Willingly flexible to assist to support efficient functioning of Adult Education programming, including flexible scheduling and adaptation to meet the needs of students.
• Citizenship, residency or work visa required.

Criminal record check requirement: The final candidate for this position will be required (at their cost) to furnish Kent Intermediate School District with a current Michigan State Police and FBI criminal records Live Scan check prior to our recommendation to hire.
