Position: Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) Teacher - Long-Term Sub

Position: Long-Term Substitute Teacher - ASD Classroom
Dates of Employment: Temporary Assignment up to 12 weeks.
Location: Elementary Level
Summary

Godwin Heights Public Schools is seeking a Long-Term Substitute to support an Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) classroom for a temporary assignment of up to 12 weeks. The Long-Term Substitute will provide a safe, supportive, and structured learning environment while implementing established instructional plans and supporting the academic, behavioral, social, and individual needs of students.

The successful candidate must be registered and eligible to work as a substitute through Edu Staff. An ASD endorsement is not required; however, experience working with students with disabilities and/or in a special education setting is preferred.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Provide instruction and classroom support consistent with established lesson plans, student IEPs, and district expectations.
  • Support students with Autism Spectrum Disorder in academic, behavioral, communication, and social skill development.
  • Maintain a structured, positive, and supportive classroom environment.
  • Monitor student progress and communicate relevant information to appropriate staff.
  • Work collaboratively with special education staff, general education teachers, administrators, related service providers, and paraprofessionals.
  • Provide direction and support to classroom paraprofessionals as appropriate.
  • Participate in IEP meetings and other student-related meetings when appropriate.
  • Maintain effective communication with students, families, and staff.
  • Implement student behavior plans and established classroom procedures.
  • Maintain student confidentiality and comply with district policies and procedures.
  • Supervise students during classroom and school activities, including activities outside of the classroom and those involving school transportation.
  • Maintain regular and predictable attendance throughout the long-term assignment.
  • Contribute positively to the overall operation and quality of the ASD program.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Superintendent or designee.
Qualifications
  • Must be registered and eligible to work as a substitute through Edu Staff.
  • Must meet all Edu Staff and State of Michigan requirements for substitute teaching.
  • Michigan teaching certification and/or ASD endorsement is not required for this long-term substitute assignment.
  • Experience working with students with disabilities, particularly students with Autism Spectrum Disorder, is preferred.
  • Experience in a school or special education setting is preferred.
  • Ability to effectively manage and support student behavior and individual learning needs.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with teachers, paraprofessionals, administrators, and other school personnel.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to use technology in an educational setting.

Physical Demands:
While performing the duties of this position, the employee may be required to stand, walk, sit, reach, stoop, kneel, crouch, and move throughout the classroom and school environment. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 40 pounds. The position requires the ability to appropriately respond to and support the physical and behavioral needs of students.

Work Environment:
Work is primarily performed in a school and classroom environment and may include outdoor activities. The noise level may range from moderate to loud. The Long-Term Substitute is responsible for supporting the safety, well-being, supervision, and educational needs of students while under their care.

Cognitive Functions:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to compare, analyze, communicate both orally and in writing in the English language, copy, coordinate, instruct, compute, synthesize, evaluate, use interpersonal skills, compile, and negotiate.
