Position: Engineer II 2026-00968

General Description:

The Wyoming Department of Transportation (WYDOT) is dedicated to delivering a safe, high‑quality, and efficient transportation system that keeps Wyoming moving. We are seeking a full‑time Engineer II in Sheridan, Wyoming. In this role, you will contribute to highway projects from planning and design through construction and final contract completion under the guidance of the Resident Engineer.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Issue, review, comment on plan sets and revised plan sets.
  • Review and approve or reject project submittals/permits.
  • Review and update forms and documentation procedures regarding construction activities and pay quantities.
  • Inspect and ensure projects/facilities are completed according to plans, specifications, design criteria, and budgetary constraints.
  • Compile and submit engineering recommendations and summaries for the design of various projects/facilities with varying levels of complexity.
  • Conduct extensive research on existing and evolving technologies.
  • Provide technical guidance, advice, and oversight.
  • Work in direct contact with contractors and subcontractors daily to manage projects under construction.
  • Deal with landowners, traveling public, and local, county, state, and federal government entities.
  • Perform field inspections, laboratory testing, materials analysis, and quality control.
  • Develop engineering models, conduct studies, make cost estimates, and submit reports, summaries, and other required documentation.
  • Review and evaluate the work of assigned engineering technicians.
  • Perform inspections and testing to ensure the contractor is constructing the project according to plans and specifications.
  • Provide the contractor with the necessary information to construct a project (showing a project and interpreting plans).
  • Calculate and document quantities for payment to the contractor.
  • Examine and verify numeric data and specifications on source documents by recalculating computations using geometry or trigonometry.
  • Resolve geometric and trigonometric problems encountered during the process of making detailed engineering drawings.
  • Review construction plans and verify they are in accordance with designated specifications and other requirements.
  • Conduct field engineering surveys, including reading a level, operating a total station, GPS, and making decisions to solve problems.
  • Check and verify the accuracy of detailed drawings and make corrections in drawings if necessary.
  • Design preliminary work, calculating land areas, earth forms, circular curves, material quantities, and other qualitative measurements using geometric and trigonometric computations.
  • Train other personnel in engineering and surveying, and proper fieldwork documentation techniques.
  • Coordinate with the contractor, other agencies, and the public when a project impacts them.
  • Oversee moderate to major construction projects by documenting pay quantities, directing the work schedule of subordinates, and working with a contractor for quality control.
  • Ensure that materials sampling and testing are performed properly; audit material summaries for QA/QC purposes.
  • Prepare water agreements, materials agreements, and other necessary agreements.
QUALIFICATIONS
  • Must be able to obtain the following certifications/licenses:
    • Valid Driver's License
    • QC/QA Certification in Soils & Aggregate, Asphalt, and Concrete
    • Asphalt Concrete, Soil & Aggregate
    • WYDOT Portland Cement Concrete
  • Knowledge of authoritative reference materials in the field of engineering.
  • Knowledge of surveying and surveying instruments and measurement and testing equipment and systems.
  • Knowledge of complex algorithms used in mathematical computer models to recognize the theory as the basis of their use.
  • Knowledge of construction methods and processes, project scheduling, cost estimating procedures, and material quantity takeoffs.
  • Knowledge of scientific and/or technical research practices.
  • Knowledge of principles, theories, concepts, and practices of engineering.
  • Knowledge of computers, calculators, survey equipment, and testing equipment constantly.
  • Knowledge of contemporary practices in road construction contracts.
