General Description
The Building and Grounds Specialist performs advanced irrigation and water management duties while supporting the maintenance, repair, and overall operation of state facilities and grounds. This role ensures efficient water usage, safe building systems, and the preservation of public properties throughout the year. Responsibilities require technical expertise, independent judgment, and a strong commitment to preventative maintenance and operational excellence in both indoor and outdoor environments.
LocationCheyenne, Wyoming – a growing community offering access to outdoor recreation such as mountain biking, skiing, hiking, and fishing. Wyoming has no state income tax.

- Perform specialized duties for irrigation systems, water management, and weed & pest management programs.
- Operate, repair, adjust, and install complex equipment.
- Perform preventive maintenance on building facilities and grounds; assist trades and contractors as needed.
- Maintain on‑call readiness and adjust work shifts for specialist duties.
- Maintain inventory of building and grounds supplies; assist with bi‑annual budget and purchase supplies.
- Calibrate and mix chemicals.
- Monitor water use, budgets, and schedules.
- Assist in training new employees on specialized and routine duties.
- Operate hand and power tools.
- Maintain landscaping in summer (mowing, trimming, trees, shrubs, flowers).
- Snow removal during winter months.
- Move furniture and set up for functions and events.
- Provide recycling services to state‑owned and leased buildings.
- Work during snow events when state offices are closed.
Preference given to applicants with 3–5 years of grounds maintenance experience.
Knowledge- Strong oral and written communication skills.
- Knowledge of Personal Protective Equipment and safe equipment usage.
- Proficiency with irrigation systems and operations.
- Knowledge of weed and pest chemical use.
- Knowledge of safety procedures and protocols.
- Computer proficiency.
- Flexibility to work and supervise across multiple facilities.
- Ability to work collaboratively with co‑workers and customers.
- Professionalism in dealing with difficult personalities.
Associate’s Degree required.
Experience- 0–1 year of progressive work experience in Building and Grounds, with knowledge equivalent to a Building and Grounds Assistant.
- OR 2–4 years of progressive work experience in Building and Grounds with knowledge equivalent to a Building and Grounds Assistant.
Must obtain a CDL license within 12 months of employment.

- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
