Heavy Equipment Mechanic, Diesel Mechanic
GENERAL DESCRIPTION
The Wyoming Department of Transportation (WYDOT) is seeking a dedicated and skilled Heavy Equipment Mechanic to join our team in Sheridan. Under direct supervision, the position is responsible for performing maintenance and repair on a wide range of diesel and automotive equipment. Duties include engine overhauls and tune‑ups for both diesel and gasoline engines, and maintenance and repair of braking systems, steering components, transmissions, and hydraulic systems.
This role ensures the reliability and safety of equipment that supports transportation operations throughout the region.
- Conduct preventive maintenance and repairs on diesel and automotive equipment, including self‑propelled or towed equipment.
- Perform safety inspections on all types of diesel and automotive equipment.
- Read and interpret technical manuals to diagnose and correct problems.
- Fabricate new equipment or parts to district standards.
- Create repair orders.
- Maintain inventory of shop equipment and supplies.
- Design and fabricate parts for tractors, mowers, and other machinery for specialized applications.
Knowledge:
- Methods and techniques of diesel and automotive maintenance and repair.
- Electronic principles and diagnostic tools.
- Light and heavy‑duty automotive equipment and parts (hydraulics, drive trains, engines).
- Grease and oil specifications.
- General servicing of equipment.
- Policies and safe work procedures.
- 2–4 years of progressive work experience in heavy mechanics, or Associate's Degree plus 0–2 years of experience.
- Ability to obtain and maintain a Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL).
- Available for emergency work calls at any time, including nights, weekends, and holidays. Must report to the Department Shop within 30 minutes of receipt of call.
- Subject to random drug and alcohol testing.
- Constant use of manual and powered hand tools, motor vehicles, and heavy equipment.
- Occasional exposure to hazardous materials.
- Ability to lift or carry 50 pounds independently.
- Capability to stand or sit and operate equipment for long periods.
- Work in adverse environmental conditions.
- Operate around high‑speed traffic and heavy construction equipment.
- Non‑exempt (FLSA).
- WYDOT will conduct motor vehicle record checks to verify a valid driver's license.
- Position includes a $100 per month tool allowance; employees must provide their own tools.
- Occasional overnight travel required.
- Wyoming Department of Transportation is a Drug‑Free Workplace.
