Overview

The Wyoming Department of Transportation (WYDOT) is dedicated to providing a safe, high-quality, and efficient transportation system for the State of Wyoming. We are currently seeking a Highway Maintenance Specialist I for our Maintenance Program located in Pinedale, Wyoming.

Located along the Continental Divide, Pinedale offers landscapes in the Wind River Range, Gros Ventre Range, and Wyoming Range. Pinedale is approximately 78 miles south of Jackson and 90 miles south of Yellowstone National Park. Outdoor enthusiasts will enjoy year-round access to mountain biking, skiing, hiking, fishing, and other recreational activities. The area is rich in history, including the Green River Rendezvous near Daniel.

Wyoming has no state income tax, offering added financial benefits.

As a Highway Maintenance Specialist, you will play a critical role in maintaining Wyoming’s roadways by leading a team and performing a variety of maintenance tasks to ensure the safety and reliability of the transportation infrastructure.

Responsibilities
  • Lead and support a maintenance team in the field.
  • Perform road maintenance duties including snow removal, surface repairs, and equipment operation.
  • Ensure compliance with safety regulations and WYDOT standards.
  • Provide on-call assistance during emergencies or adverse weather conditions.

Essential Functions
  • Safely operates and trains others to operate complex machinery in specialized maintenance applications.
  • Lead daily maintenance tasks as assigned; provide regular work direction to crew.
  • Assist with tracking inventory, material usage, labor, and equipment mileage in the supervisor’s absence.
  • Provide advice on repair procedures and make recommendations for unplanned maintenance activities.
  • Serve as technical resource for the crew; ensure activities meet state and federal safety/quality standards.
  • Communicate project issues to the supervisor; propose safe actions to keep projects moving forward.
  • Provide input on crew performance observed in the field.
  • Operate heavy equipment such as trucks with attachments, aerial lifts, plows, wing plows, sanders, and chemical systems.
  • Oversee rehabilitation of roadway surfaces and traffic control devices; supervise on-the-road traffic control operations for safety and quality.
  • Attend and complete required state and federal training to obtain/maintain certifications and learn new skills.
  • Utilize computers for training, performance evaluations, and WYDOT reporting; operate programs such as email, Word, and Excel.
  • Supervise others to schedule daily work activities in a safe environment; make independent, sound decisions daily.
Qualifications

Education
:
Associate's Degree (typically in Engineering)

Experience
: 0-2 years of progressive work experience (typically in Highway Maintenance/Highway Construction) with knowledge at the level of a Highway Maintenance Technician

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations
:
Must have the ability to obtain a Class A Commercial Driver's License within 12 months of hire

Preferences
  • Preference may be given to applicants with 3-4 years of progressive work experience (typically in Highway Construction and/or Highway Maintenance).
  • Agency requires that the incumbent obtain a Class A CDL with appropriate endorsements within 30 days of employment.
Knowledge
  • Knowledge of highway maintenance operations and safety standards
  • Knowledge of computers, WYDOT databases/systems, and reporting
