Position: Highway Maintenance Tech I, II, or III - Sweetwater, TX

General Transportation Tech I:
Performs routine transportation operations or maintenance support work such as roadway maintenance and repair; light and heavy equipment operation; preventive and minor maintenance on equipment; traffic control; and helping the public during emergency situations. Work requires contact with private entities. Employees at this level follow standard practices that do not require frequent supervision of details.

General Transportation Tech II:
Performs moderately complex transportation operations or maintenance support work such as maintenance contract and/or material and process inspections; roadway maintenance and repair; light and heavy equipment operation; preventive and minor maintenance on equipment, traffic control; and helping the public during emergency situations. Work requires contact with private entities. Employees at this level perform work independently on assignments; however, all unusual issues are referred to the supervisor.

General Transportation Tech III:
Performs highly complex transportation operations or maintenance support work such as contract maintenance and/or material and process inspection; roadway maintenance and repair; operates light and heavy equipment; preventative and minor maintenance on equipment; traffic control; helping the public during emergency situations; and training other employees. Work requires contact with private entities. Employees at this level perform work independently on assignments; however, all unusual issues are referred to the supervisor.

The essential duties for the General Transportation Tech I include:

  • Assists in identifying, repairing and installing signs, delineators, mailbox supports and posts; performs basic welding as needed; as required uses/moves equipment/tools, materials and products related to these activities.
  • Assists in providing support to local law enforcement officials at accident sites; assists stranded motorists as required.
  • Assists with traffic control; places and gathers cones, warning signs and barricades; flags traffic.
  • Determines placement of traffic control devices and installs/moves devices.
  • Inspects barricades to ensure compliance with barricade standards.
  • Maintains highways and rights-of-way; performs roadway repairs; erects and repairs guard rails, highway markers and signs; hauls materials and equipment to job sites.
  • Maintains picnic and rest areas, rights-of-way, maintenance yards and comfort stations.
  • Move/picks up litter and roadway debris.
  • Mows rights-of-way and picnic and rest areas; performs plant and landscape maintenance including trimming trees and brush.
